I have been thinking a lot about the theros storyline after reading the planeswalker guide to journey into nyx, and i am just wondering " Why kill Xenagos?" he didn't kill anyone, he doesn't deserve the death penalty, does he? just because Heliod doesn't like him Elspeth and her buddys are going to assassinate him? that doesn't make much sense if you ask me.
At his revels? They stoned humans to death as part of the ceremonies that fueled his ascension*. He may not have been directly throwing the rocks, but it was his party. Plus, he's keeping people chained up in a maze of underground tunnels to work as part of the rituals of his ascension. And it's because of his actions that the gods are fighting amongst themselves, and when the gods fight mortals get caught in the crossfire.
So there's certainly blood on his hands.
Now, do I think he should die? After seeing Heliod in action in Godsend, nope. I'm on Team Xenagos here. The gods are petty, cruel, fickle, and possibly a little crazy. They need to be taken down a peg (at least Heliod; Nyela's not so bad, although she did suck all life out of the Skoal Valley just because Xenagos disrespected her, and Purphorous is just addled and broken after Kruphix lobotomized him, which is sad) and Xenny's just the goat-man for the job.
*Well, at the one revel we see in Godsend, they kill the human.
If you read the Part 3 of Planeswalker's Guide to Theros, you'll see what a "satyr revelry" (Bakkeia) actually is, specially what happens to non-satyrs involved.
Then, if you read Xenagos's planeswalker profile, you will see how "he has been known to push revelries a few steps too far". Yes, he pushed those orgies of violence and defilement to be even worse.
So, even before ascending, he was a bastard among bastards. Then you get to read what have done to achieve godhood.
In Planeswalker's Guide to Born of the Gods, you can see that Xenagos's rituals to become a god caused a great number of Nyxborns to show up in Theros, causing conflict and war.
And that, after ascending, he is causing a Great Revel of chaos and madness across Theros. Read again about what the Satyrs do, now on a plane-wide scale.
MTGSalvation Wiki's page on Xenagos also says he "began gathering his forces of eldritch, otherwordly monsters to attack the poleis of Meletis, Akros and Setessa", before the godhood rituals started.
This is all without reading the actual e-book (I didn't).

Well, he did kill a bunch of persons in the first novel.
And potentially could have destroyed Meletis and the rest of mortals if Elspeth and Daxos hadn't been there to slay Polukranos that had been stirred by Xenagos.
But the reason he has to be stopped is because of what happens when he ascends to godhood. Sadly, this part wasn't covered in the first novel, but I have my theory.
Nylea is the only one aware of Xenagos's plans to surpass the gods after she met him to understand why he would help Polukranos. After the conflicts between Heliod, Purphoros and the rest of the gods reached its peek, Kruphix used his magic to bind all gods to Nyx, preventing them from entering and meddling with the mortal realm. Nylea objected, saying that the mortals wouldn't be able to stop Xenagos without the gods at their sides, but she couldn't resist Kruphix's magic.
My theory is that if Xenagos were to become a god following Kruphix's intervention, he would be the only god with access to both Nyx and the mortal realm, giving him free reign over Theros. I get the feeling Kruphix wouldn't hold any power over Xenagos since he isn't like the other gods (Kruphix being the eldest god, it makes you wonder if the others are his creations.)
I don't believe in the death penalty (occasional murderous rage aside), but Xenagos is kind of a mass murderer, an enslaver and a violent terrorist. That'd be "he deserves to die" level of territory for many people.
If Xenegos were a real person, I'd agree with the people saying he deserves death for what he has done.
I tend to be much more forgiving with fictional characters and I'd like to see what his God status means in other planes, so I am actually hoping he isn't killed off (yet).

I don't think he's going to remain a god given what Godsend is able to do. It can cut things out of Nyx. Literally.
That is how Polukranos fell to Theros in the first place.

Am I mistaken, or isn't Godsend just some of Heliod's divine power poured into Elspeth's weapon?

Eh, he's kind of a douchebag, but so is Heliod. They both come off as villains, really. I hope Elspeth finds some third option between the two; her being the "champion" of the god of self-centered jerkassery kind of makes her look foolish. I really like Xenagos as a character, and I hope he sticks around after the block regardless of what happens. Maybe the Godsend will just make him a mortal again without killing him?

Nah, it'd be much more likely he'd retain his spark for two reasons.
1) Branding. You want characters you can reuse and if you aren't going to kill them, you want them available for later.
2) It is SO much more thematic that he be exiled from his homeworld considering the existential crisis that led him to seek apotheosis in the first place.
How I want to see it happen: The gods curse him with exile and bar him from ever coming back to Theros, sans the eternal life and godhood just to make it all the crueler.
Well here we are again
It's always such a pleasure
Remember when you tried
to kill me twice?
Oh how we laughed and laughed
Except I wasn't laughing
Under the circumstances
I've been shockingly nice
You want your freedom?
Take it
That's what I'm counting on
I used to want you dead
but
Now I only want you gone
She was a lot like you
(Maybe not quite as heavy)
Now little Caroline is in here too
One day they woke me up
So I could live forever
It's such a shame the same
will never happen to you
You've got your
short sad
life left
That's what I'm counting on
I'll let you get right to it
Now I only want you gone
Goodbye my only friend
Oh, did you think I meant you?
That would be funny
if it weren't so sad
Well you have been replaced
I don't need anyone now
When I delete you maybe
I'll stop feeling so bad
Go make some new disaster
That's what I'm counting on
You're someone else's problem
Now I only want you gone
Now I only want you gone
Now I only want you...
gone

I, personally, would be okay with another planeswalker no longer being a planeswalker, or even being killed. There's been less than a handful die and/or lose their spark since Urza.
Also, didn't his ascention to godhood cause the fabric of Theros to unravel?

It's heading in that direction, but not yet. There's at least one set left, and it'll probably "fix" things in some respect. Though I really hope the status quo is shaken up in some meaningful way.

I'm hoping for that too. I have bristled at the idea of "Helliod is the god of good, so just do what he says and serve him. Virtue! Honor! What's this? A mortal calls me out on my lies? Kill him!" I'd love to see a twist where Helliod is shown to be just as big a hypocrite as Xenagos. Maybe Elsepth needs to not kill any Gods, but simply make them all mortal.

Actually Heliod is already shown as a massively unpleasant person, while some of the other gods are portrayed more sympathetically, which is why I think he will join Xenagos and be destroyed or kicked out.
All the gods in theros are just as immature as the ones in the greek/roman myths. I wonder if they did this on purpose or not.
