I know you guys have always said I'm welcome here but I'm also conscious of the fact that much of what I post isn't about the story but the actual history of the game.
Anyway, this is one of those posts - over on my blog I've started a series which will debut six pieces of Magic art produced in 1994 that have never been seen. Honestly, I'm not sure anyone who works at WotC now even knows they ever existed.
This post is the prologue and it's about the 1994 binder and how it led to these unseen pieces, the like of which I've never seen attempted again in Magic's history.
I've already liked the post on Facebook, but okay. I really like that piece with the artifact-playing wizard. Kinda sad that you used the typical beardmage, though. At least it wasn't gray hair

[I was permabanned and all I got to show for it was .... well, nothing.]
As someone who admires the artwork of that period it's always fantastic to get extra insights into things. I was just looking at my The Dark, Ice Age, Homelands sets and admiring the art this week.
Big fan here its really cool to see how your grown artistically over the years. I hope some day I can meet you at an event and get some signatures! Keep up the blogs I'll be following =-D
Always cool to see an actual MTG contributor stop by to chat with us fanboys.
I'll check it out as soon as I can get a break from this ridiculous work schedule I've got.
An interesting post. Can't help but sometimes wonder what exactly goes on in the different stages of card, story, or merchandise creation. Thanks for shedding a little light on the early history.
Lovely to take a trip down memory lane. You know I'm busy packing for a big move and sorting through some Mtg boxes. Found old copies of the Duelist and paged through them admiring all the extra little bits of art and reinterpretations. Also was looking at my Alliances set, Lake of the Dead always inspired me so much when deck building in highschool. Such a great artwork that made my imagination soar.
Well if colored cards are out but it isn't an artifact, it must be a land. Are they standing on a Strip Mine? What's with the reddish lines behind the figures in the lower half?
Not sure about the hand, wish it was a Brass Man's hand.

Yeah, it's a cliché now. Probably was then too, but it was early days of Magic, and of my painting skills.
Still, facial hair happens.

On my blog: the unveiling of the first of six promo pieces for Magic: The Gathering I created in 1994. Never seen before on the internet!
Have fun spotting all the cards! I think most of them are pretty easy in this one but one might escape you!

my guesses:
Awesome! Off the top of my head I recognise:
Black Lotus,
Gauntlet of Might
Black Vice doll
Juggernaut
Ornithopter
Dragon Engine
Yothian Soldier
Chaos Orb
Obsidian Golem
Obelisk of Undoing
Amulet of Kroog
Unsure about the other two but I think they could be Ashnod's Transmogorant and Primal Clay

BTW, there are at least two pieces you haven't spotted.

Wow, I totally didn't notice that
Still searching for the other
The one I can't figure out is the mechanical hand holding the cards... very Urza's Avenger-ish but not.
However, there's still at least two others. One I will say is affiliated with artifacts, but not an artifact. I think you'll get it.

My guess would be the first, though.
EDIT: totally outlclassed
