I'm with the idea that we are summoning copies rather than the real article.
From the Legend standpoint, it would be really disruptive to the life of a Legend being called away constantly.
I look to Avacyn and how much Innistrad needs her to be around to keep balance. It would be nearly impossible if every Walker could whisk her away every time.
Legends that run the Guilds cannot afford to be called away constantly by Walkers.
There are also Legends who have lived past their prime. So a copy makes more sense without having to explain time theory.
Eldrazi Legends show how powerful the originals are. Summoning the real thing would be a death sentence since they naturally would sap away all the mana. A copy on the other hand can omit such dangers.
It seems more likely that this is a change to accommodate future releases that heavily feature legends. While it can be reconciled, as hashed and rehashed here, it doesn't need to be for the game to work. Maybe they'll officially explain it sooner or later.
