I think the reason that Jace is liked by the majority of casual players is that he has a cool cloak.
Same, and I can understand liking something just for aesthetic reasons. I like that Vincent guy from the Bebop movie I've never seen purely because of his look. I like a large number of Sith purely because they look cool (Darth Nihilus and Darth Sion in particular) and like Arcades Sabboth purely because he has the best name in Magic.
It's just I would never say any of the people mentioned are great characters because I frankly don't know anything about them.
I think the reason that Jace is liked by the majority of casual players is that he has a cool cloak.
I find that a pretty condescending thing to think. oh I can't stand so and so's character how can he be popular it must be because all they see is a shiny cloak. just because they are casuals they didn't spend five minutes looking at his Wikipedia article and taken a liking to his character or the twenty or so minutes it takes to read any of the online stories featuring him. oh no it must of been shiny cloak.

I take offense as I consider my self casual
I have read his wiki page and read his comic books and can say quite proudly, as mono-blue characters go, I much prefer others. Ixidor while not being a walker was more adept at Illusions and used his talents for more than just doing what I was told by others. Jace for the most part literally follows the whims of others until he finally moves on and leave the infinite consortium.
Bo Levar, a blue planeswalker was an interplaner pirate/smuggler. READ his bio and tell me Jace is a better man than him. Bo Levar cared for a child that wasn't even his and showed more emotion than Jace ever has in any of the books.
is the fact you do so suppose to mean anything? I guess it's suppose to mean that anyone who has read his stuff is suppose to agree with you and if they don't it's just oooh shiny cloak? also your examples of what jace does compared to what those others do show you know nothing what so ever about jace.
edit I read bo levar's bio and judged them to be equally good men also no where in the bio does it say his daughter isn't his.
I think Stonecrowe was just joking so I think you might want to relax a little. It's all aesthetics and and aesthetics are subjective. If you like Jace that's fine. If you don't that's fine. If you're meh about him that's fine. If you think he's got a cool cloak that's fine, too.
indeed as long as you don't insult people while doing so and I found my self insulted by the sentiment of the post I first quoted. the other one quoting my response seemed to imply he also agreed with the insulting sentiment. though really I guess I shouldn't have been insulted I guess some people do just like a person for their appearance and who am I to say they aren't the majority.
While it's obviously unlikely that everyone who likes Jace is ignorant, I think it's pretty much a given that the majority of people choose their favorite character based on aesthetics. Jace does look cool. He's got a sweet hood, and some kicking glowing runes, and a lot of people would probably say he's the most attractive of the main walkers. It may be shallow, but it's not inherently bad, and I'm not knocking people for liking him. But I don't really like him, and I think that they could create a walker with similar aesthetic traits with a more interesting character, who would be just as popular.
On a related note, apparently Ravnica is now the center of the MtG multiverse and I vomited a little in my mouth.

I don't think he meant that literally. He probably meant that story-wise Ravnica will be where many of the stories revolve around. Which makes sense. A large city plane that it seems as though many walkers pass through seems like a good place to center most stories if we're going to be moving in a direction that focuses on intertwining the planeswalkers more often the way it seems we are.
Maybe I care less because I started playing when RTR released and so not only do I not have the attachment to Dominaria that older players do but I also have an unfair attachment to Ravnica but I think the move makes sense. I think we will one day go back to a full block in Dominaria but I think Ravnica is a better overall setting for what they're trying to do. Besides isn't most of Dominaria in a post temporal apocalypse state?
It all has to do with the way that characters are written. And I guess that's obvious. But I LOVED Jace in Agents of Artifice, because Ari Marmell wrote him (and Liliana and Tezzeret) so brilliantly. Since then, not so much. I find him rather boring and cardboard-like. But that's probably because he's been mostly written by Doug Beyer, who, well, though I love and appreciate Doug, isn't the best at bringing characters or narrative to life. I would love to see Jenna Helland or Adam Lee's portrayal of Jace.
Actually if you read the The Planes of Planechase (6 years old, makes me feel ancient) it states the conditions of the various parts of Dominaria after the mending.
Tolaria - Rebuilt and thriving, called "Academy at Tolaria West".
Vesuva Isles - Shapeshifter Isles, never visited before but shown to be ok and fine.
Krosa - Repaired by the use of the Mirari and is well on its way to recovery.
Llanowar - Rejuvenated since the apocalypse
Otaria - Fine but land seems "aching".
Shiv - Phased in, fine not destroyed
I'm sure now after over 100 years some sort of peace has returned.
Not sure where you get the idea that the descriptions are from after the mending. Especially Vesuva is said to be depicted in "a more pristine state" implying that it does not look like that after we've seen it in timespiral.
I'd also wager that Otaria as a whole is still an unwelcoming wasteland with only the Krosan forest making something of a recovery.
As an aside, it is implied that Tolaria West is not Tolaria, or where Tolaria once was. Infact, in timespiral Tolaria is shown to be little more than underwater rubble. Tolaria West is a spiritual successor, not a rebuilt Tolaria per se.
@Flisch
Yes Tolaria West isn't built on top of the remains of Tolaria because they are quite deep. Obliterate also destroyed the land beneath the academy. However Tolaria West is it's spiritual Successor. It states after the events of Karona and the Phyrexian Invasion (Through the Temporal Rifts above) the forests of Llanowar have been restored. They show the states of Dominaria after the apocalypse, the only one I am unsure of is Vesuva which I assumed was showing a vision of the future in Time Spiral. It also shows Shiv after the events of the mending because it states it being phased in by Teferi.
Well, the artworks are somewhat ambigious. There is nothing to indicate the art itself is from post-mending, but it could be, because we know at least Llanowar has recovered. However, it could still be that it looks different in its recovered state. A cataclysmic event of the severity of the temporal crisis is likely to leave some irreparable scars on the environment, even if the lands are "fully" healed.
The only art that's confirmed to be post-mending is Academy at Tolaria West, but that's kind of a nobrainer.

Matt Stover's Tezzeret is better than Ari's, but a bit too altruistic.
Tezzeret is pretty much the only blue walker that's interesting to me, due in no small part to Test of Metal. All Agents of Artifice did was make me dislike Jace and Liliana for the whole Kallist thing.

I agree. Before I got into the lore, Jace seemed the most appealing of the walkers but the more stuff I read, the more disillusioned I became. Agents of artifice made a big deal of how Tezzeret and Jace are different in their mind magic due to how they use it, but I don't see it. Jace has no real qualms of mindwiping somebody without a good reason. Tezzeret at least has a purpose when he shoves a parasite that will break your spine, to your nose. After the newest UR Ral might have some potential instead of being a guy who zaps everything and everyone due to anger management issues, and hopefully Ashiok will come on its own as a character once we get back to Theros.
Stover's Tezzeret also thinks very mechanically. Emotion is almost like a foreign concept to him, but he's completely understandable in his motivations and methodolgy. More than Jace, Tezzeret is the embodiment of Blue as a color.
I like Ashiok, but mostly because I see him as more black than blue.
I just started reading, but looking at the pictures, I already LOVE Kaladesh! Looks like it's that steampunk world that MaRo has been teasing us for years about!
Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the original Chandra story, Chandra's village got destroyed because they believed it harbored a cult/group of Pyromancers, not believing Chandra on her own caused such destruction. Compare with this story, which tells us that Chandra got hunted down, and the soldiers torched the village because they wanted to scapegoat her. Seems like quite a change here.

My Commander decks:
Chandra, Torch of Defiance - Oops! All Chandras.
Prime Speaker Zegana - Draw for Power.
Pir & Toothy - Counterpalooza.
Arcades, the Strategist - Another Brick in the Wall.
Zacama, Primal Calamity - Calamity of Double Mana.
Edgar Markov - Vampires Don't Die.
Child of Alara - Dreamcrusher.
Ok, now i really want us to visit Kaladesh in the future. It resembles Esper in a way, with many cultural diferrences though.
Also, i guess the spoiled Chandra can be considered official now.
Having childs speak as though they are adults is used a lot in literature but i do agree that she would easily be 15-16 and no one would raise an eyebrow.
