Tezzert hiding from the Phyrexians (non-planeswalker art)
Jin's art.
Glissa leading an army.
Karn himself. (With a snazzy new makeover)
Plus plenty of other lovely artworks.
So what can we glean from these peices?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I'm really digging Karn's new makeover. I wonder if this is Venser's handywork since Planeswalkers can't shapeshift anymore. No idea why he has a shoulder brace when he holds no weapons or sheilds.
The new Tezz are is obviously playing on the fat pack art for besieged. Though I wonder if Tezz is trying to do something sneaky, or if the Phyrexians are trying to find him.
Jin's art is not what i would expect a blue preator to look like. It's not the design itself (though i'd rather see him with many, many eyes)... it's his pose. He's basically roaring, mindlessly. Hands out stretched, doing nothing. He's not even turned to the camera. I understand he's probaly difficult to draw because of his body type... but at least have him doing something scientific.
Glissa looks much different in this new picture. Ugly and sickly. Very Phyrexian, but I'm not sure I like it.
I'm afraid I'll have to disagree with you on Karn's Planeswalker art--I don't like it. It looks too... well, too something, but I can't quite put my finger on it. Mecha, maybe?
I'm slightly underwhelmed by Jin as well, though I admit he looks cool. Just not how i would imagine a blue praetor to look, however.
But enough of the negativity--everything else looks fantastic.
This set may have the best art since Shadowmoor.
"I'd rather die speaking the truth than live a lie." --Gix, to Yawgmoth (pre-Phyrexia)
Is it me, or does thr second pic look like a Phyrexian Golem Artisan...
For some reason, I coulda sworn Gitaxis had four arms. Wow I feel stupid.
Ya know, they keep saying Glissa is Compleat, but the only art of her totally Compleated is in Steve's Prerelease art!
Looks like Indomitable Archangel isn't so.. well, indomitable.
Honestly, I don't like how they portrayed Karn in this image. Maybe it's just the pose, but whenever I see the image I think 'top heavy' for some reason.
that second to last art, the one with a masked man holding Sword of War and Peace... is the guy from Dispense Justice.. i wonder if he'll have any story relevance.
I thought that the null seraphs were merely captured angels forced into their horrifying new natures. I don't know if it is better or worse that angels can actually be affected by the oil as this picture implies.
I'd really like to know if there's a rhyme or reason behind the Gitaxians' love of hobo fashion. Even Jin-Gitaxias himself has some of that ratty old cloth around his... I guess that'd be his waist.
Maybe its their theme of defying Blue's own theme of perfection. Lab coats would be the option of the average Blue scientist, but that's too perfect for the phyrexians, so they want imperfect clothes.
Well, you see... when you're just that much of a b.a. scientist, you typically don't have to time to change your clothes.
B-but... honestly, this just hardens my ideal that Jin might have once been a being from the Dross.
I think it's mainly his over sized shoulder pads (shoulders?) that make him look so top heavy. Take off those... and then he's still got ridiculous upper body physique.
Personally, I'm liking the look of the corrupted "Etched". I never really noticed before, but I think it should be noted that this card actually shows the least of the black sun.
Hmm... it's utterly possible Jin merely controlled his every mutation through the completion process, right?
So, if he were once a denizen of Mirrodin, he could very well have been anything and simply altered himself to what he appears as now.
I mean, what need does a Phyrexian have for internal organs? A hobo's gotta watch his figure after all!
*Glares at Jin's fat waist line*
Edit: Oh my, you can see some of his organs in his chest, can't you?
Why did they put on clothes in the first place, though? Their bodies are built to make them into perfect instruments, what reason do they have to cover up? Not for warmth, surely, and clearly not for fashion. It makes sense for the Orthodoxy because they love form over function, but what actual function does this ratty brown cloth serve for the Gitaxians?
I doubt Tezzeret is literally hiding, there. He looks suspicious, more in an "I think they're on to me" kind of way.
Ah, that's very true.
I'd assume by that statement that Jin and his underlings merely wear what they wear to provide some form (no matter how apparently minimal) of sanitation in their work.
After all, you can't have your Moriok puss leaking into your Fangren carcasses.
Edit: Note that the ever sneaky Tezz probably yelled that little comment out loud.
Those were his cloths he had on from the day he was compleated. Having never impeded him, Jin never bothered to take them off.
"You were lucky Death was here to save you this time!"
She could also have a tap ability relating to creatures, or maybe even reduce the cost of creatures you cast by some amount. Almost definitely creature-related, though.
I don't know...
I'd prefer him in his earlier Planeswalker version
I hope that this is because he lost some of his other powers [after closing the rift]. Otherwise, it might indicate that he doesn't have a spark, just Legacy. I'd hate that.
Well Brady made it explicitly clear in the "You are a planeswalker" article he wrote when Planeswalkers were introduced that nothing about the definition of a planeswalker had changed.
So unless that policy itself has changed, Karn has to have an active spark.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Of course him having a spark or not is moot since planeswalkers can no longer shapeshift. So Karn's new body was built, either by himself or another artificer (say Venser).
I rather like the compromise between Karn's old form and his planeswalker form. He feels less clunky and more powerful.
My only problem with it is that his left side is built up so much more than his right side as if he was designed to carry a sword and sheild... but he doesn't. The only way i can fathom this design is if Elspeth had some say in his design... which is confusing as to why Karn would let a random stranger decide his final appearance.
* Maybe creative is trying to subconsiously link Karn to a knight in shining armor to convey his loyalty and richousness.

Anyone else notice the "Etched oracle parody"?

Not saying that it's her I just remember that she was like the only attractive Phyrexian ever?

If so, its nice. I hope to see Doc again at SoM storyline.
Yeah! Me too.
I hope to see Nick's funniest duo "Doc & Tezzie" again.
