So Wotc released a sales summary for the Tez vs. Elspeth Duel deck, and in it is the following...
Key Selling Points:
• This is the sixth release in the popular “Duel Decks” series.
• Each Duel Deck comes with two 60-card decks featuring cards from throughout Magic’s history
• Includes 12 rare cards, including foil alternate art versions of two Mythic rare Planeswalker cards.
• Six total cards will feature brand new art, and two preview cards from the fall 2010 Magic set, Scars of Mirrodin™ are included. • The two featured Planeswalkers will play a role in the story of Scars of Mirrodin.
^ Which confirms that Tez and Elspeth will be involved in Scars.
Othere interesting tid-bits. We see Tez with gray hair, and it looks like these will be reprints of their Alara cards instead of preprints from Scars.
Well, I don't think they mentioned anywhere that they would be pre-spoiling walker cards. That being said, I like the new artwork, but I still think it's pretty odd that Elspeth might become involved in some way on what we last knew to be a mostly dead artifact plane.
It's nice to see that they're trying to keep using the cast of neowalkers they currently have, rather than constantly inventing and introducing new ones.

Second, LooooooooooooooooooooooooooooL! I've just talked with some friends the past few days what SoM could be like if Karn is to return and so.
We've come to the conclusion that he might be coming back corrupted without knowledge of what happened and such, and that Bolas might want to get the legacy stuff thus sending Tezzeret there (web comic hint).
Then we also came to someone who needs to try to prevent this stuff. We talked about some new walker maybe and stuff and somehow ended up with Elspeth, no kiddin.
We looked at the old webcomic of her and came to the conclusion that it could've been pyhrexia (i know we had this already and its pure speculation).
But I can't think of any other way than Elspeth hearing that the phyrexians are back and was told how to get to Mirrodin.
(could it be a phyrexian sleeper cell that got her?)
Except, why would Bolas want the Legacy weapon? From what I understood, it was more or less designed for the explicit purpose to kill Yawgmoth, which it succeeded in. That said, the weapon itself is now in pieces- Gerrard is gone, Weatherlight is on the bottom of the sea, Urza's dead and his eyes are...I have no idea. Even the giant mana battery made from Serra's Realm also was used up (and theoretically released it back). And if that was the case, I'm pretty sure that there would be very little that Elspeth could do from when we last saw her. I mean, she walked away after feeling a little guilt ridden and being unable to cope with what was going on.
And no, Elspeth is not a sleeper agent. Phyrexians more or less lived and existed to serve Yawgmoth, and now with him gone. We will probably see something of the Phyrexians in of their technology, philosophy, or some shadow of their influence. Lastly, they'd have to warp the timeline to match it.

For the moment I'm going to step back and let the narrative unfold to see what kind of motivations could POSSIBLY get Bolas interested enough to let Tezzeret go to Mirrodin.
Elspeth has to play off Tezzeret somehow... because she makes not a damn bit of sense dropping by Mirrodin. And everyone who keeps talking about Phyrexians torturing her can stuff it, that would be such a ham-handed story turn as to blow all suspension of disbelief away.
And what if is Elspeth the one who created the new life in Mirrodin? It may be hard to happen, but a desolated plane found by a walker who dreams to liva in an utopia...
(And before say that this idea is to Serra-like, juts look at Elspeth.)
And what if is Elspeth the one who created the new life in Mirrodin? It may be hard to happen, but a desolated plane found by a walker who dreams to liva in an utopia...
(And before say that this idea is to Serra-like, juts look at Elspeth.)
Since when has Elspeth had the ability to spontaneously generate life? Her card produces tokens, but presumably this is the "summon a Soldier from somewhere else" variety. She certainly doesn't have the capability to populate an entire plane.
We'll have to wait for Test of Metal or at least a webcomic to see just how this conflict gets set up. Until then all we have is vacuous speculation.
I know many people think everything Tezzeret does now is motivated by Bolas, but have you considered the possibility of Tezz going to Mirrodin on his own? We know Test of Metal is about him "seeking a secret power source he needs to reinvent himself." Maybe he hopes to find the source there... and if the Mirari still exists, he might even succeed.
If I remember correctly, The mirari was taken off of mirrodin by Karn. I agree, however, that Tezzeret's actions are probably his own, and not or at least only slightly influenced by Bolas.
I might have been a bit hasty when I criticized the new Tezzeret artwork with only the small streak from the Arcana available. Now when I see this image that show his whole body, I admit it looks much better.
And yes, I'm also surprised we'll see Elspeth in SoM. I kinda expected Tezz, but Elspeth?
Well, the Duel Decks pointed out the eventual conflict between these two, and new Tezz was almost a no-brainer in SoM. Elspeth is a little bit suprising, but it would be more without the Duel Decks coming before it.
It is probably also the reason why DD:EvT are released just a week after Relics and before SoM, instead of the traditional November date of the planeswalker DD - both JvC and GvL come out after the fall big set.

If only that were the case. Regardless of the fact that the Mirari has literally started entire widespread disasters across two Planes now, Karn thought it would be a brilliant idea to just leave the blasted thing in the hands of Glissa, Slobad, and the severed head of Geth. Then he decided to blast off of his Plane again because he has the attention span of a gnat. It's the equivalent of a father realizing his child is the spawn of Satan and then handing it off to two strangers and a loaf of bread that can talk and asking them to take care of it.
I love that alt art of Elspeth. I'll have to get some.
Interesting; I love the original art because the style is *so* baroque. That piece may as well have been signed by Rembrandt instead of Volkan Baga. Seriously, take a look at some of his stuff:

Obviously he wants the Mirari.
With the Mirari in his possesssion he'll finally have a mirror worth loooking into.... Bwahahahahahahahha... oh... we're talking about Bolas not Niv-Mizzet... I don't know.
I'm kind of hoping that Tez goes AWOL and goes to Mirrodin of his own accord, because if this is another Bolas mission, i might just have to scream. See the Mirari is something i think Tez would want, but Bolas wouldn't. I'm having a tough time imagining Bolas going out of his way, sending his minons to far flung planes, to pick up mana batteries. (Unless there's another use for the Mirari i'm not thinking of)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* Elspeth can't make life... in fact, no walker can. Memnarch transplanted life to Mirrodin, Karn took souls and gave them bodies, but no planeswalker can just "magic life" into existance. Unless they are all magical constructs, Elspeth isn't the one who made them.
Also, there can't be all that much time between the end of Alara and the start of Scars. So unless the whole story is about the 20 or so creatures Elsepth has planeswalked to Mirrodin, I really can't see how you could do Elsepth as the origin of life on Mirrodin. It needs more time.
I know many people think everything Tezzeret does now is motivated by Bolas, but have you considered the possibility of Tezz going to Mirrodin on his own? i posted this on a separate thread, but here it is again. i bought the smaller $8 version of "The Purifying Fire" and found this description on "Test of Metal" on the back of the very first page of thew book:
"From the ashes of defeat, Tezzeret rises again. Beaten to within an inch of his life and left for dead by the psychic sorcerer Jace Beleren, Tezzeret is revived by the ancient dragon Planeswalker, Nicol Bolas, who has plans for the embattled artificier: Find Crucius the Mad Sphinx, and with him the secret of etherium."
Sweet! So we'll see more of them in Scars! Now I can get 2 Tezzerets for my deck...:D
1. There could be any number of reasons why Bolas would want to know how to make Etherium. It's a very useful and powerful material.
2. Why would Crucius be on Mirrodin? Test of Metal is just a planeswalker novel, not a Scars of Mirrodin novel.
3. I am soooo happy to finally be able to see Crucius! I had been so disappointed when that plot point had failed to be followed up on in the Alara storyline, like so many other details of the setting that get lost in the cracks.
You have no idea how much I would want an anthology of short stories from Alara, in the style of those old "X of Magic" collections. Two halves, one pre-conflux and one post-conflux. Pre-conflux, we can see stories of the people of Alara, seeing more about how they live. A story of the humans of Naya, a traveller bargaining with a sculler for passage through Tidehollow, a view of Jund through the eyes of a young dragon. Post-conflux, we see the new Alara and its people. A vedalken's journey from Esper to the wilds of Naya, a Nacatl's place amongst the sigiled of Bant, just seeing how the plane is managing to pull itself together in the wake of war and unify as a single, unbroken plane.
But that will never happen so woe is me. At least we have Crucius, so, yay!
1. Yeah but it's annoying to see that Bolas wants everything in the Multiversum. We even thought he wanted the Veil from Liliana for a while. I think Bolas is cool but to see him everywhere and trying to gain everything is annoying. It's like eating something you like every day over and over again and someday it doesn't taste that good anymore.
2. Ok but we know Tezz is going to Mirrodin so I believe it could be possible Crucius may be there. But yeah you're right we don't have it clear where he is searching for Crucius ^^
3. Yeah it's good to see that they don't throw away those Ideas. Now we finally get a Planeswalker Sphinx that sounds pretty cool.
Well, Bolas is at least justified in being here in that Tezzeret and Bolas are connected. Anything involving Tezzeret is going to have some link to Bolas.
I was thinking...maybe there was some link between Esper and Mirrodin from the get go?
I mean, other than the shoddy tentative link of "they're both artifact oriented planes."
Perhaps Crucius left for Mirrodin from Esper in search of more things. Who knows?
Ah well. I for one will just wait and see.
2. Why would Crucius be on Mirrodin? Test of Metal is just a planeswalker novel, not a Scars of Mirrodin novel.
This is an important distinction. Test of Metal isn't going to be the first half of the Mirrodin block's novel. It's going to be stand alone. The ending might have Tez seek something in Mirrodin... something needed to make Etherium*.
Perhaps Crucius left for Mirrodin from Esper in search of more things. Who knows?
That doesn't really work with the timeline. Though it could work in reverse. Crucius came to Mirrodin when Karn still ruled it and left something behind*.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
* What might Crucius have left behind? What might be the mysterious ingredient needed to make Etherium? Well think about this for one moment...
Serum.
What if the Blinkmoths found on Mirrodin were brought there by Crucius to keep them safe. What if the serum they produce is used to create Etherium. You'd tie up alot of loose ends and give Tez a reason to go to Mirrodin.
** Bonus, this would also give Tez a reason to seek out the Mirari as Memnarch would have the needed knowledge on how to get Serum from blinkmoths.
It would make some sense to have the blinkmoths involved in some sort of plot point, since we sort of got left hanging as to where they came from/went during their cycles. It's just as possible that Tezzeret will find Crucius, and then after head of to Mirrodin to set about...Who knows, use it as a basis of Esper's grand plan to improve life or whatever may mesh in?
That said, Memnarch as we know him is gone. The Mirari is still an incredibly powerful artifact in its own right, though.

I don't see why Karn would recreate the Mirari if the personality wasn't saved. The Mirari's mission is done, the only thing that's left is the personality. (Which if you recall, Karn felt responsible for Memnarch going crazy and all the events of Mirrodin)
The Mirari has to still be Memnarch. Otherwise it woudln't make sense for it to exist at all.
