When Nicol Bolas fights the leviathan it is a planeswalker so does this mean that a being does not have to be able to truly intelligent in order to planeswalk?
WEll to have a spark you must be sentient... who's to say that it wasn't? However admittedly that fight took place in MTG's early days, maybe before the Sentience ruile applied...
The original duel between planeswalkers took place between Bolas and an unnamed planeswalker that apparently had the shape of a leviathan when battling Nicol Bolas.
This battle left to the rift at Talos Gate as well as the creation of the gate itself.
Given some of the even more odd things that Wizards cannon has done why is a sentient Leviathan out of the question? I don't believe that they have released a primer that says Leviathan's are all of animal intelligence. If anything being in blue should hint at the possibility of a higher thought process.

I think Sarkhan could only shift himself to dragon, none else.
By the way, what event are you guys talking about?
