If you don't want to answer the pay wage question, I understand, but would you say it is a reasonable means to support yourself and a family? My cousin is an excellent fantasy writer/artist and I constantly recommend him to apply to the Magic Creative team.
It may indeed be possible for some authors with a larger backlist than myself, but no, I have not given up my day job.
I'm not head of the creative team, I'm just some guy who thinks logically it seems bizzare for a man and a fish or bull to first of all try to procreate, come out with something completely healthy, and thus ignoring all of the real worlds natural laws. Toss in a Wizard? Sure why the hell not. Infact I would hazard a guess that some Simic experiments involve interspecies couples looking to procreate. A more benevolent front of the Simic.
This is all just the ramblings of a random reader with a fever.
I was thinking (since that's all I can do, since I'm on another PC since mine had its heatsink fall off the CPU...)
- As far as I understand it, the Azorius make the laws, and the Boros enforce the laws that they feel like. This would make me believe that the Azorius consider themselves the owners or the leaders of the Boros. Is this your feeling as well, or do the Azorius basically out-source actually dealing with criminals to the Boros?
- Certain flavor texts give me a strong mercantile vibe for the Simic - they not only create Biological Stuff, but they police its distribution and copyright, even going as far as to promote bidding wars. Is most of this done in-house, or traded off to the Orzhov?
- Do most of the Azorius members think in the "Everything has to be stopped because people are evil and stupid and we're the only ones who know what's best" mindset, or in the "It sucks that we have to do this, but the pre-GP wars showed this stuff is required if we're even going to survive" mindset?
- It seems that the Rakdos and Dimir are most interested in destroying the Guildpact. In some way, was this actually their role in the Guildpact? To ensure that things never got too stagnant?
- Tying into the previous one (and I realize you might not be able to answer this) - does the Guildpact itself (as a quasi-living-or-sentient-spell) know if/when it's past its prime? Some sort of "We're hurting this world more than we're helping it" thing?
- Ravnica's Mythbusters would be hosted by Izzets, right?
- In your opinion / worldview, how bad were the pre-guild wars? Were they as bad as the populace assumes, or is it more of a case of "wow, the Rakdos and Boros really hate each other with the Guildpact, it must have been a lot worse before?"
- How many questions people have asked here basically make you wonder why the hell people want to know these? I felt weird asking half of these, I imagine this thread reminds you of a Star Trek convention...

no. its like Congress and the Police... One makes laws, the other enforces.
- Certain flavor texts give me a strong mercantile vibe for the Simic - they not only create Biological Stuff, but they police its distribution and copyright, even going as far as to promote bidding wars. Is most of this done in-house, or traded off to the Orzhov?
I'm pretty sure that everyone, including the Simic, have to deal with the Guild of Deals here.
- Do most of the Azorius members think in the "Everything has to be stopped because people are evil and stupid and we're the only ones who know what's best" mindset, or in the "It sucks that we have to do this, but the pre-GP wars showed this stuff is required if we're even going to survive" mindset?
I bet that some Azorius members think one way and others, another way. There must be countless numbers of different groups supporting different Guilds and laws and such. I like to think of them like the US Congress. I bet different Guilds have lobbies in the Azorius
- It seems that the Rakdos and Dimir are most interested in destroying the Guildpact. In some way, was this actually their role in the Guildpact? To ensure that things never got too stagnant?
Then why would they sign on? I think that the Dimir would want to keep the Guildpact, but are trying to become more powerful. Maybe the Guildpact is preventing them? The Radkos just want the Chaos of not having the Guildpact.
- Tying into the previous one (and I realize you might not be able to answer this) - does the Guildpact itself (as a quasi-living-or-sentient-spell) know if/when it's past its prime? Some sort of "We're hurting this world more than we're helping it" thing?

Probably the same as it was now. But I wouldn't know.

Hmmm... at the risk of bringing the wrath of Monkey upon myself...
About the races in Ravnica seen previously in Mirrodin. Obviously there are Vedalken and Loxodons, but looking the familiar accent of one the Ravnican goblins (the one who suits up Kos at Pivlichino's in Ravnica. "Big convocation soon, huh?") It's pretty obvious that at least some of the Mirrodin goblins were from Ravnica. I can't wait until I can get my hands on Dissension... I need to see if there's anything in the book about Memnarch's soul collectors. Perhaps it has something to do with the Kuga Mot?
Adam would certainly be Izzet. Jaimee is more reasonable, but not a genetical manipulator or something Simicanian like that. I'd say hes mono-:symu:. On Ravnica he´d probably join the Izzet though. He might not be very :symr:, but I can´t picture him picking Aozrious, Simic or Dimir over Izzet.
i agree with you that jaimee should be mono-:symu:, but i cant see him joining the izzet guild, they are way to rash. the reason i said simic is that they take more time, they analyze and check every angle before testing (which he does in almost every episode i must add).

I just finished the first Ravnica novel and I have a question about the massacre that Kos & Munich investigate at the beginning: who killed everyone? It didn't really seem clear in the book (maybe I just missed something). Was it the crazy Rakdos lady with the claws that Kos kills (Padilla?)

if i remember well it was a rakdos "party", they brought in some slaves maybe but it was basically a bloodbath where nobody was supposed to be left alive (such is the rakdos way), for proof of this i point you to the flavor text of Slaughterhouse Bouncer.

Nope, guys. According to Cory, it was Jarad, who killed everyone.
He killed off all the Rakdosans except Palla and saved the girl. If I remember it well, Cory said that the "torn" limbs that Kos and Zunich observed were in fact gnawed off by Jarad's bugs. When the wojeks reached him, he just tossed a grappler somewhere and vanished with its help.

Anyway, I was rereading the the Ravnica books to prepare for Dissension, and I noticed what seems to be some sort of very, very small hole in the plot of the first Ravnica book. Whenever Kos is recuperating in the hospital after the Goblin suicide bomber destroyed the bar, Nurse Argh says that the aura in the infirmary will heal Kos faster than on his own. Later on, Kos says that he could just as easily go find a shaman or a healer to heal him instead of drops. But Feather says it's not just drops that could kill him, but any healing magic, including Selesnyan faith healers.
So, if any healing magic could have killed him, then why was it overlooked that the infirmary had a healing aura?
It's not really a big deal, since he survived the god-knows how many drops. I just wanted to know.
It was any rapid healing magic that could have killed him. But it didn't, so it's a moot point.
But on the subject of the 'drop taking, and its curing of Kos's alcoholism... since 'drops are concentrated time, I'd assume that many at once somehow allowed his body enough time to recover from alcohol dependency? Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
If the drops worked like that, then he should be dead from old age alone by now. Oh wait.....Well, at least it wasn't the old age.
That is how he died, though, I believe. If I am not mistaken, after Crix had given him the drop, he had a seizure and dropped dead, or at least, that's the gist of it.
If one drop 10 years from when he discovered another drop could kill him did kill him, then wouldn't constant exposure to a healing aura be just as dangerous over time?

Right and right. It is stated that after the Decamillenial events, Kos had to rely upon the slow, his own natural healing abilities. He had the one "lucky" drop with him, and he knew that he'll die after using it. Technically, it was a choice between bleeding to death or dying "healthy" from a heart attack.

i stand corrected, thanks car, as i read the book (and as my understanding of the rakdos expanded) it made sense the idea of a blood party, i knew Jarad had saved the girl, but i must have missed the page where cory explained he had used his bugs to dismember everyone.

Hey Cory, since Dissension is out can we ask some questions now?
A)When in the timeline does the Ravnica block take place?
B)What event caused Ravnica to be shut off from other planes?
Absolutely! Mind you, that doesn't mean I can necessarily answer all of them definitively.
For example:
A) I have my own ideas about when the trilogy happens, but that will ultimately be up to the Magic creative team. And personally, I'm in the "time doesn't necessarily move in at the same rate in every dimension and/or plane" camp anyway.
B) A big event. But that's a question that, again, I'll have to defer to the Magic creative team to answer in good time. The "cut-off" and the reasons for it evolved along with the trilogy. I can definitely say that the "bubble" around Ravnica is the direct cause of that unusual human longevity we see in people like Kos.
And a question for all y'all, while I'm here--did you get your reading copies of Dissension from Fat Packs? Just curious, I won't be ratting anyone out if their local bookshop sold some individual copies early.
Hey, I have a question. (and btw, I get mine from phatty packs) Why were all of the blue guilds evil? Dimir, the ultimate evil. Izzet and their Zomaj Hauj or however you spell it. Simic and Vig's dastardly plans, and then the ultimate Azorius evil...what's with blue being so evil? And I think there was a thread on it as well.
On a side note...you should visit the personal writing forum! Even I have a story there, and I'd love criticism from real authors.
2 things
1. are the Hazda (volunteer police force) in The Ravnica book the same as Haazda Exonerator?
I am enjoying the books after a long absence from novels while I was away at school (I am only up to chapter 8), but I also have a question concerning time in Ravnica
2. Several times in the first few chapters Kos thinks about how it had been 57 years since he killed but it is also referred to as 8 decades since he died, what is the deal with that?
thanks for the all the help

how far in advance do you write the books before they go to editing before the set comes out, is it written along the same timeline as a set is developed?

hope you are still there. i just finished the book and i have a question as well: Why was the witch Izolda instead of Lyzolda?
For the same reason as Isperia was mentioned as Hesperia. This was probably caused by the fact that Cory was provided by character names in a great advance before the cards' names were given a final form. I have to say that I like both of the book names better, Hesperia reminds me of Greek myth's Hesperides and Izolda is a name from an European myth about two lovers, Tristan and Izolda.

Loved Dissension.
Just to make sure, Ravnica is flat, right? It makes reference to the northwest poll and such, so I figured that it would probably be flat. If so, what does the edge look like?
I give Dissension my lowest rating ever 9 Thumbs up! /kidding
Cory, fantastic job with Dissension, I mean as I read I would say, Oh I hope this happens, or this better not happen and I wasn't let down. All the twists were actual twists, feasibly but still have a somewhat shock factor to them.
I read Ravnica in about 2 weeks, Guildpact in a week, and Dissension in 3 days. I just couldn't put Dissension down.
A few questions: Spoilers for those still working on it.
What exactly is Lupul?
He seems to be very Dimir, and seems alot like the card Dimir Doppleganger. How exactly is Augustin in control of him/her/it?
Was The Hussar's Last Mission from MTG.com somehow related to Dissension?
Where did Niv-Mizzet exactly go? Another region of Ravnica? Couldn't Crixizix be able to connect to him via the Firemind? Does it suggest he left Ravnica or he just shut her out of his mind?
Since Arygem has a Boros Leaguehall, is it safe to assume that the rest of the guilds have one as well?
It may indeed be possible for some authors with a larger backlist than myself, but no, I have not given up my day job.
