The Guildpact was broken in the first book's ending, when Kos arrested Szadek . Its magic was void since that time.
So: Simic Combine, Azorius Senate, Boros Legion, Cult of Rakdos and Izzet League lost their guildmasters.
Razia - killed, replaced by Feather (Pierakor)
Niv-Mizzet - left Ravnica after killing 2 nephilim, replaced by unknown
Rakdos - thrown back to the pit, his consciousness shattered between his followers
Grand Arbiter Augustin IV - killed by Szadek AND the explosion of Parhelion]
Momir Vig - killed by Agrus Kos
Prahv destroyed by explosion of Parhelion. Much of Ravnica destroyed by nephilim.
Jarad turned himself into a zombie and retained the control of Golgari.
New Guildpact, this time a kind of standard treaty, is established, written for the most part by Teysa Karlov.
Agyrem, the Ghost Quarter, has overlayed Ravnica, and the world exists in a dual sense now. Szadek has survived in the ghastly form, even the Parhelion explosion, and Agrus Kos is granted a new, permanent spiritual body to serve as an Agyrem Boros Guildmaster, to oppose him.

Well, the thing is, it's implied that Niv left Ravnica as a whole. It's never said for sure, though. This is why there are so many questions as to whether or not he is a 'walker.

In short, the Guildpact worked because it had opposition. That opposition was the Dimir. The reason the Dimir were created was to have a foil to the Azorius to oppose the guildpact, work in secret and cause its magic to work. Kos created a paradox when he arrested Szadek. He broke the guildpact by trying to save it, because szadek could never kill the guildpact anyway.

I'm actually re-reading the books, but there was something about the number 10 that was magical or something, so they had 2 guilds to oppose the Guildpact. It was a really weird story, ergo I'm re-reading it.
About any "subpar" mechanics or cards: Context is king.
If I make a templating or grammar error, let me know.
The franchise MtG most resembles is Battlestar Galactica. Why? Its players exist in, at most, a dozen different models at any given point in time, with perhaps up to 3% variation, 5% if you're lucky.
The other guild incorporated for opposition was the Cult of Rakdos (duh!!!).
"The magic of the Guildpact draws its strength from opposition. That's why Szadek and the Dimir were included in the Guildpact. Rakdos and his foul ilk, too."
It's not the exact quote, but close enough - told by Augustin to Kos.

Okay, how did the storyline end? Well, essentially on page 284 of the Dissension book, by Cory J. Herndon, it narrates that the Azorius declare martial law, and elect their Augustin IV as the "judicial dictator" (pp. 284), after a senator (Borbin) 'snaps', so to speak, and bellows "Enough!" and stands.
After this happening, the other senators essentially say "I concur", or say, "I second what that dude said."
Agrus Kos, 'possessing' the body of an Azorius law/ectomage by the name of Obez [who is rather obese (pun?)] intervenes and objects to this motion, and then Augustin IV and Kos begin their word-war.
<Skip a bit.>
PP. 310 - the new Azorius guilmaster has taken the name Leonis II.
<Reverse a bit.>
PP. 304 - Augustin IV and the spectral Szadek are at it, "locked in a deadly embrace - one ghost, one mortal, both doomed."
<Reverse a bit more.>
PP. 149 - "The Dimir exist to oppose the Guildpact, to strengthen its power by the force of that opposition. It is why House Dimir was welcomed into the accord. Rakdos and his foul ilk, too. The Guildpact could not have lasted as long, or been as powerful, without that equal and opposite malevolence. But you arrested Szadek for crimes against the Guildpact. You created a paradox in that his actions were the very essence of his purpose within the Guildpact."
Damnit, this was hard to find. Also, Caranthir, you have an awesome memory, if you can recall this! Anyway, I'll probably be back with more, given that my stomach acid doesn't 'eat' me.;)

In fact it was never said that he left Ravnica. He Fought and killed two nephlim, then decided the battle was begining to bore him.And left Utvara.
Wish i had the books on me because i coulda swore he said he was going to one of his lair. Then someone asked Krix where his lair was and she told them he has lairs all over Ravnica. If someone had the book on them and confirm it either way it'be apriciated much.

I have the book!:)
A tiny nitpick, Jiyor: It's Crix, and later on, after the promotion, it's Crixizix.
Um, okay, on page 55 of the Dissension novel, it says narrates that Niv-Mizzet, having killed two nephilim, and being slightly wounded, thinks (some Izzet members have telekinetic links; one such member is Crixizix, because she is ... good [?]) "That was fun. But I grow weary of this." Then Crixizix thinks, "But my lord, there are still three of them. You must-" To which Niv-Mizzet interrupts with, "You presume to tell me what I must do? No. This was an enjoyable diversion-one that I am quickly losing interest with. Nothing more. I think I shall retire and watch the others try their might against the nephilim for a while."
You are leaving? The goblin asked in mental disbelief.
The Firemind did not reply. Niv-Mizzet wheeled one last time in the sky and veered off toward one of his many hidden aeries in the sky in the north. Crixizix noted that he did not go back in the same direction he had come. Niv-Mizzet was abandoning the City of Ravnica, it appeared.
PP. 309. - "While she waited, she [Crixizix] stared at the capped caldera Niv-Mizzet had created before flying of into the unknown. Crixizix had felt no contact from the Firemind for days. Wherever Niv-Mizzet was, he did not want to be disturbed."
PP. 311 - Kos: "What, has Niv-Mizzet decided to turn Vitu Ghazi into a scratching post?"
"What? No, Niv-Mizzet has left for-[I'm guessing, "good"]", the angel [Feather, the new Boros Guildmaster] said.
Why didn't anyone clue Agrus Kos in before he sent Szadek to the proverbial slammer?
It seems that if he knew that what he was doing would dissolve the Guildpact, he would have tried something else...

because when this was taking place no one present knew of the paradox this event would cause(except Szadek but he doesnt count), and all the people who knew wanted the paradox to take place(Szadek more or less included).

I think that they should have expounded on the fate of Ravnica a little more at the end of the series.
Saying that the Guildpact was replaced by a set of laws not dependent on magic is kind of open-ended...
Actually, Grand Arbiter Augustin knew about it. He let Szadek be put in lockrings and put into Azorious dungeons so that he could simply kill Szadek and take control of his ghost along with all the ghosts that Szadek controls. He did this to A) get control of a huge ghost army that can take down the angels in Agyrem and B) break the Guildpact so that the Azorious could take over.

That's true, I almost forgot about that.
Unfortunately for Augustin, he couldn't fully control Szadek, as can be seen from the scene when Kos (in Wenslauv's body) tossed the grounder-and Szadek-right at Augustin, letting them fight it out as Prahv blew up.
I can't believe Augustin was so cocky as to reveal his plans before it was too late for Kos to stop them...
Yeah, I like how they referenced that in the Guildpact novel. Kos thinks to himself that Zomaj Hauc "sounds straight out of a zib-store novel."
Hooray for breaking the fourth wall!
I'm annoyed that Hauc's fate was not elaborated upon, since the spirits of Agyrem are moaning at him at the end of Guildpact. I was thinking that he might make a cameo in Dissension, perhaps as a ghost under Szadek's command, but I was instead rather disappointed.
Ahh, the omnipresent vice of arch-antagonists
I'd say overconfident. And that is a classical personality trait of both U and W characters, villains even more so.
Can anyone guide me to the point where WOTC stated the planeshopping had an underlying purpose? That line caught my interest. Presumably it has something to do with the Time Spiral's catastrophic turn of events?
It goes beyond doubt that we return to Ravnica one day, IMHO. It's a cool setting (perhaps 2nd only to the backdrop of the Weatherlight saga, IMO) and the end was really open-ended.
And I still see no clue which would imply that the Firemind left Ravnica as a plane...
sorry asian but the wiki section provides no clues, the only real clue we have is that crix can no longer feels the firemind, she says its like the firemind left ravnica entirely but it could simply be Niv just closed the mental connection with them so they couldnt find him.
A lot of people want him to be a walker and cory left it so open that it could become so if they ever go back to rav but theres no solid proof that it is so by the end of the trilogy.

True, but it's always fun to imagine the possibilities.
So, how did the storyline end? Did the Guildpact survive? And which guilds were behind its erosion?
Thanks!
