I really want to jump into Magic more. The cards irl are too pricey so that's a no-go. And Duels, as fun as it is, doesn't give all the cards. Not even half!!
If Magic Online had the engine / interface of Duels it'd be way way better. Right now it's super old, clunky, and unwelcoming to newcomers.
I only just started learning Magic, so I have no idea if a new update is in the works, or hell, maybe a new Magic video game?
Yes and no. MTGO just launched a major client upgrade to modernize the interface et. Unfortunately the design process took so long that it feels 10 years old already.
The big challenge with MTGO is capturing the seamless feel of something like duels without losing the complexity of Magic The Gathering. Duels does it by omitting steps and phases.
I think wizards is brainstorming a new digital product. Considering how weak the market was to paying for upgrades in the last set of duels it has to capture the spending demand of players who play MTGO right now which is much higher on a $/player basis than duels patrons. The new digital game has to have ladder/tournament prize support from somewhere to capture more than a casual market.

Out of the blackness and stench of the engulfing swamp emerged a shimmering figure. Only the splattered armor and ichor-stained sword hinted at the unfathomable evil the knight had just laid waste.
It's been confirmed in their quarterly report thatthe so-called Magic NEXT is scheduled to arrive in 2017, but it's anybody's guess exactly what it will be or how will it work.
Last time it was mentioned, apparently the idea for it is to have a product somewhere in between Duels and MODO that would let people escalate from the former to the latter, but THAT is something I can't even imagine as to how they'll manage.
