If I target and opponent and that opponent's creature with Searing Blaze and then my opponent sacrifices said creature, will Searing Blaze be countered? If not, why then does Searing Blaze not fizzle when Cryptic Command would in the same situation? Is it because cryptic doesn't say and? I'd like to know because when this situation arises online with Searing Blaze my damage still goes through.
A spell is countered on resolution only if all its targets have become illegal. Searing Blaze has two targets, so making only one of them illegal doesn't make it fizzle, it still resolves and affects the remaining legal target. Cryptic Command is no different when you choose the two modes that target (counter and bounce), but if you choose a mode that targets and a mode that doesn't (like bounce and draw), it only has one target, and if that sole target is made illegal, Command is countered and thus has no effect.
