Hey all,
A creature I control is targeted by Burn Away, but the six damage from the spell is dealt to my Palisade Giant. If the Palisade Giant dies later that turn, does my graveyard then get exiled? Does Burn Away care about the TARGET creature dying, or the creature which actually took the damage?
Thanks in advance.
To answer this question I'm going to do something dangerous: refer to an Alpha printing of a card. Disintegrate refers to the specific targeted card while Disintegrate has a wording much similar to Burn Away. Also compare Burn Away to Annihilating Fire or Anger of the Gods. Most importantly: Touch of the Void. If they meant that creature, then they would have used "that," and in Burn Away's case, they did.
So Burn Away means the original targeted creature.
I am not 100% sure in this case. However Magic is not the Game that let we "assume" how card works , there is Comphrensive Rules to be referance.
Burn away creates Delay triggered ability , while Disintegrate creates Replacement effect. So they are not quite similar.
For how Delay triggered ability works , they are described in Rule 603.7 , but there is no comment about how Delay triggered ability affect object - which is refered by the souce of the ability itself with "target".
Let's see Rule 607 about "Link ability". But Burn away seems like it isn't a Link ability by these Rules.
I don't object Boyachi because I am not sure about the answer too.
I just mean , we need a relevant Rules to answer.
Anyway , Maybe I am overthinking.
This question may simply be solved by "English meaning"
If people are sick of reading about stuff just stop taking part. You have 100% control over what you read. Simic Ascendancy isn't going to get banned just because you didn't tell someone to shut up on the internet.
Thanks for such detailed answers. =)
That helps clear it up, and it does sound correct (especially looking at Boyachi's Disintegrate example).
Thanks again, I appreciate it.
Giant redirects the damage, and only the damage. Other effects from the spell are applied to the target, for the simple reason that Giant doesn't ask we redirect non-damage effects.
614.9. Some effects replace damage dealt to one creature, planeswalker, or player with the same damage dealt to another creature, planeswalker, or player; such effects are called redirection effects. (...)

Obviously , English is not my first Language (sorry about that ).
If the original creature dies for any other reason, the GY will still be exiled.
