Howl of the Horde makes copies of a spell. Say that spell is a burn spell. If my opponent reacts with a deflecting palm what is the source of damage? Are there several sources? Please someone help give some insight into how this would play out and why it works that way.
You cast Howl and it resolves, unaided. This creates a delayed trigger ability.
Next, you choose to cast a Lighting Strike. The delayed trigger from Howl triggers and goes on the stack.
So the stack looks like:
1. Lighning Strike
2. Howl Copy Ability
You both pass priority, so the Howl Copy Trigger resolves and creates a copy of Lightning Strike. Now the stack looks like this:
1. Lightning Strike (The original)
2. Lightning Strike (copy)
Now, your opponent chooses to respond with Deflecting Palm. In casting, he must choose a source. There are currently two choices on the stack for him to pick from. Lets say he picks the first lighting strike.
The stack looks like this:
1. Lighting Strike (The original)
2. Lighting Strike (The Copy)
3. Deflecting Palm
Assuming you both pass each time you get priority from now on, it will resolve like this:
Deflecting Palm resolves, creating a prevention effect.
Lighting Strike (The Copy) resolves and deals three damage to your opponent.
Lighting Strike (The Original) resolves and has its damage prevented by the Deflecting Palm prevention effect.
Immediately after the prevention effect stops the Lighting Strike (The Original) damage, the rest of Deflecting Palms ability follows through to completion and deals three damage to you.
