Just curious. I'm new and learning. Here is what happened.
It is my turn and I have Arbor Colossus in play. I choose to activate his Monst. ability so I can destroy a Desecration demon which would effectively be a game win next turn since my Broodmaster spat out 11 11/11s and I had Nylea on the field. Anyways, in response to me activating his effect, opponent activates Hero's Downfall. Would my colossus' ability resolve first?Would he gain +3/3 AND allow me to destroy a flier or would heroes downfall interrupt his effect and kill him off?
1) You activate Arbor Colossus's monstrosity ability.
2) In response, opponent casts Hero's Downfall.
3) Downfall resolves, killing the Colossus with monstrosity still on the stack.
4) As Colossus no longer exists on the battlefield, it can't become monstrous and Desecration Demon survives.
Hopefully this answers your question. Good luck in learning the ropes!
Worth noting: killing a creature does not counter its abilities. If I control a sunblade elf and activate its ability, killing it doesn't stop it from pumping everything else.
The reason you can kill colossus to stop it is that it's two abilities. You activate monstrous and when that resolves it triggers the ability to kill a dude. If you kill colossus in response to the monstrous ability, when monstrous resolves it tries to put counters on it and checks if that triggers anything, but the colossus is dead, so there's nothing to put counters on and it's not there to trigger its second ability.

Check out the thread for my cube if you have the time, and tell me how terrible it is.
Generals meant to be drafted first in a single pack of 6 cards.
And here is the actual cube, meant to be drafted in 4 regular sized packs. (60 card decks)
