After wanting to punch a cockatrice player in the face (repeatedly, I might add) I decided to make sure I had the argument right.
Primeval Titan at 8/6 from Slayer's Stronghold and Double strike from Sunhome, Fortress of the Legion is blocked by my 2/2 Voice of Resurgence and 2 6/6 Elemental tokens. Rule 702.19b covers trample to first assign lethal damage (if able) to blocking creatures. His argument was to look up double strike and wizards said I lose. I did, and it said that combat damage assigned during the first strike damage step is only applied by creatures with first and double strike (which he said trample allows him to deal it all to me). I.E. nothing that changes rule 510.1c that a blocked creature assigns its combat damage to the creature(s) blocking it in damage assignment order until a minimum of lethal damage is reached for the blockers in order.
My 15 years of experience playing this game and moderate knowledge of the rules (expanded thanks to judge apps!) tells me that I am right in saying his titan might survive (by 1 toughness if damage was assigned to lethal both the voice and an elemental token and not to both elementals) and I would take 3 damage from trample after the remaining 5/5 elemental token (again, if he assigned combat damage intelligently...).
If not, I might as well just sell off my collection now after I make a trample/first strike deck that acts like thorn elementals to sweep the next pro tour.
Okay. I think what you're trying to say is correct. After blockers are assigned during the first damage step he would have to deal lethal damage to what he could. Say he did lethal to your token and Voice of Resurgence. In the second combat step your other token would be able to deal its damage as a blocker, not being able to kill it but dying because of the lethal damage and he could redirect the remaining damage (4 in this case) to you. (Because SBA were checked and your other creatures are gone. (Providing they're Eles from Voice of Resurgence.))
Yes they were Voice ele tokens, and would be only 3 damage because Voice dying would have made a replacement token dropping the remaining token in combat to a 5/5, not 4/4
