1) Heroic triggers when the spell that targets it is cast. So by the time your opponent has priority to cast vines of vastwood heroic would already have triggered and will resolve whether the spell you cast is countered or not.
2) Vines of the vastwood does not give the creature hexproof. If an effect made your anax and cymede hexproof your spell's target would still be legal since the ability hexproof states that the object can't be the target of spell or abilities your opponents control. Since you'd control the permanent with hexproof you could still target it.
However as I stated vines doesn't give the permanent hexproof. In this case the controller of the vines of vastwood's opponents can't target the creature. So the battlewise valor would be countered in this case, however as I stated the heroic trigger would still resolve normally.
Note vines doesn't give hexproof, it gives an ability that is similar but different. If it was hexproof you could still target your own things, but vines says opp can't target it and you are his opp so you can't target anything he vines (once it resolves).
1) heroic trigger still goes thru, once an ability has trigged it is going on the stack and resolving (unless they somehow counter it, aka stifle effects)
2) if they give hexproof to your guy then they can't target it and you can. (again vines doesn't give hexproof).

4/15/2013 This is not the same as hexproof. If, for example, you target one of your opponent's creatures, your opponents won't be able to target their own creature with spells or abilities.
I have Anax and Cymede and I target it with Battlewise Valor. My opponent responds with a Vines of Vastwood to make my creature Hexproof.
So I guess I have 2 questions
1)If the target of a spell becomes illegal, will the heroic trigger?
2)When an opponent makes one of the creatures you control hexproof, who can/can't target that creature?
2) Vines of the vastwood does not give the creature hexproof. And turns out we did play out the scenario properly. Imagine that.
Thanks again!
