So I cast Banishing Light. It resolves. The triggered ability targets something irrelevant that my opponent controls. Then, while the ability is on the stack, my opponent casts Blatant Thievery at instant speed (presumably due to his Hypersonic Dragon, for example), gaining control of my Banishing Light. Then he turns the Willbender he controls face-up, changing the target of the Banishing Light's ability (that I control) to Banishing Light (which my opponent now controls, which means that it's a legal target for the ability). Then the Banishing Light's ability resolves.
What happens to the Banishing Light? Will it stay exiled or will it stay on the battlefield?

How to use card tags (please use them for everybody's sanity)
[c]Lightning Bolt[/c] -> Lightning Bolt
[c=Lightning Bolt]Apple Pie[/c] -> Apple Pie
Vowels-Only Format Minimum deck size: 60 Maximum number of identical cards: 4 Ban list: Cards whose English names begin with a consonant, Unglued and Unhinged cards, cards involving ante, Ancestral Recall
What would happen is this: The trigger would resolve, exiling the Banishing Light. The duration would then immediately end, as Banishing Light would no longer be on the battlefield, which would cause it to return to the battlefield, under its owner's control, and re-trigger its enter the battlefield ability.

Wouldn't the fact that the Banishing Light no longer being on the battlefield refute the argument, though? After all, if it's no longer on the battlefield due to its ability's duration starting, then there is no ability to keep track of anymore, which means there would be no need to bring back anything from exile to the battlefield anymore.

The existence of the ability on Banishing Light doesn't really matter once there is an instance of the triggered ability on the stack (abilities being separate from their sources and such.) We could add flashing in Opalescence and Humility in response to the triggered ability as well and it wouldn't change the situation. It's the triggered ability that sets up the duration-based zone change.
I think what you're getting at here is the rule that states that if a continuous effect meets its condition for ending before it begins, the effect doesn't happen at all (e.g., you don't steal a creature if you activate Rubinia Soulsinger's ability and sacrifice her in response to it.) However, in this case there is a distinct order to the events that makes that rule not apply to this situation - the game can't recognize Banishing Light as having left the battlefield until it actually does, and the effect must begin for that to happen.
