So, I quit playing magic after Onslaught came out. I just didn't have the time. I recently got back into it (a few months ago). I mostly play casually, so had to be brought up to date on the rule changes.
Then, somebody dropped a planeswalker on the table. This was a bit of a surprise for me, but they explained the mechanics, and we were off to the races.
Well, something has been bugging me, and, after reading quite a few threads, I think the people I've been playing with have got it wrong, but I wanted clarification. So, here's my question:
Can you redirect (or soak) damage from your planeswalkers to you?
I've ready a dozen posts that clarify that you can't have one of your planeswalkers take the damage for you (redirect from you to one of them), but can you do the reverse?
A friend played Karn Liberated. I'm obviously screwed, so I attacked Karn. I killed his blockers and was going to do 10 damage to the planeswalker, but my friend said that he would "soak" the damage. Since he had over 50 life, it was not problem for him. I then tapped out my lands and creatures (manaweft sliver), and cast a fireball at him, redirecting to Karn, but, again, my friend said he would soak the damage. Needless to say, I lost the match. Is this how it should go? Are there any rules on it? Am I being crazy?
1) If a source you control would deal damage to an opponent, you choose whether to redirect it to one of his planeswalkers, not him.
2) You can't redirect combat damage this way.
3) You can only redirect damage from the player to the planeswalker, not the other way around.

Thanks for any clarification.
