At FNM last night I was on U/w devotion playing against BW Midrange. My opponent was winning with a Blood Baron on the table, although I was about to untap with a rapid hybridization to get rid of it. He swings, I start to go to my next turn. Judge happened to be walking by and noticed that I had been at exactly 10 and my opponent at exactly 30, but neither me or my opponent caught the Baron transformation. The judge stopped us and just told me I was dead and the game was over.
Was he really supposed to do that if my opponent wasn't keeping track of his own Baron and the judge just handed him the game? I had a long way to go to get back into that game, but the road was there. I just said "oh, ok" and scooped but it's been bugging me ever since.
Legit move or no? It's fine either way but I hoped to get some clarification.
So you're upset that a judge noticed you were not maintaining the game state and corrected it?
If this was casual REL, which FNM usually is, a mistake in the board state that is noticed presently is usually unwound and corrected, in this case, you're dead.
Yes, it is the responsibility of the Judge to help maintain the game state and keep everyone following the same rules. They are not allowed to offer strategic advice, but there was nothing strategic about this situation. The Blood Baron of Vizkopa has a static ability that made it a 10/10, regardless of whether or not you or your opponent acknowledged that fact; the judge was correct in making this call.
Ok, thanks for clearing it up. I never said I was upset, and I complied no problem when it happened, I just wanted to make sure it was a valid action on his part. Not complaining, just checking. It's not often that a judge just happens to walk past and declare the game over when you thought you had another turn to get back into it.
FYI...
It's both player's responsibility to maintain a correct game state. You are as equally responsible as your opponent is for realizing that the Baron is a 10/10.

Just for clarification.. Missed triggers and maintaining a proper game state are different. You can let your opponent miss triggers, but Blood Baron's effect isn't a trigger.
Wow, you guys are taking this way further than it was ever intended to go. I suppose the specific question I should have asked is "is Blood Baron's transformation a static ability or a triggered ability" and this thread would be about the question instead of about me. I didn't argue anything to anyone ever. It happened, I said sure, I thought about it some more overnight, I thought I'd ask the question because I wasn't certain.
So, break out the torches and pitchforks, right?
Obviously I don't think I should have won that game. I don't think anyone did anything wrong. I didn't say anything about anything making me a better or worse player. It's probably safe to assume I don't think I'm the better player, given that this came up as a question at all. I was trying to learn if a judge had taken a legitimate action, which he had. End of discussion, right? Or do you guys want to pile on some more because I asked a rules question in the rules forum?
I'm gonna edit the initial post. There is no reason for anyone to be using this as an opportunity to score points against me or twist my words into something that never happened.
Some of you should re-evaluate the way you go about "helping" people when they ask a question.
Chances are, if you're overreacting to an answer you didn't like to a rules question you asked by censoring the original question so that no other players can learn from it, you need to rethink your behavior.

He has hardly been over reacting. He has actually been more neutral with his tone than the people responding in the thread

C'mon man, don't be that guy.
