You would be correct. The Hill Giant dies after first strike damage is dealt and the cobra's triggered ability resolves. It's not around to deal its combat damage.
Just to add, when a creature with first strike is in combat, there is a second damage step that we have go by, the First Strike Damage Step, before going to the Damage Step. So, after first strike damage is dealt, triggered abilities can be put on the stack so the Cobra's ability will destroy the Giant. You will then move to Damage Step and the giant will no further be there to deal any damage.
The same is true for creature with first strike and deathtouch, except the destroy is applied as a state-based action, even before triggered abilities are put onto the stack.
