Hey guys, i'm new into Magic, and i've been playing for a month now getting used to the cards, i had a interesting things about the heroic's cards from theros and born of the gods, and had a question, i had aruling on something that i didnt get. to straight to the point. i had my Hero of iroas [2/2] with heroic ability. while my opponent lets me summon him to the battlefield, i asked him if there's any respond, he said none at all. then i played my enchantment with my Ordeal of purphoros,
then he said i will react to my heroic trigger, then he taped for his mana, and casted shock, and instant spell that deals 2 damage to my creature. Now, to the point of this Thread, is my Creature dead? or was i suppose to have my +1/+1 heroic trigger at the same time he activated shock? saying would i still live with [3/1]. To me, i felt like i gotten cheated, but maybe you guys can help me out to resolve this. Thanks!
Your opponent is correct. Whenever an action occurs in magic (either with a player casting a spell or an ability triggering) both players get a chance to respond by doing something. In this case he is responding to the heroic trigger by casting shock before the heroic trigger can resolve.
Your Hero would be dead. Heroic triggered abilities use the stack just like any spell would, and its effects don't occur until the trigger resolves. That being said the heroic trigger can be responded to, which is what your opponent did. So while the trigger was on the stack your opponent responded and cast shock. Since objects on the stack resolve in last in first out order the shock would resolve first, causing letha damage to the hero and causing him to be destroyed before the heroic trigger resolves.
Ahh, i see, this really helps alot, cause i went to the tournament feeling down after that hit me, cause i didnt really understand, its pretty helpful, now is there somethign that i could of done, like God's willing, or anything else to prevent this from happening?
Sure, objects on the stack resolves one at a time and before they resolves both players will receive priority to act. So you can respond to your opponents shock with god's willing, saving your hero.
