i remember there was a way to cast something with Lion's Eye Diamond. does it have to be an instant to work, say you announce the spell and then use the diamonds ability or does that not work anymore?

Typically it is used in conjunction with Infernal Tutor, cracking LED with tutor on the stack to both enable hellbent and give you mana to cast what you plan to search up. This works with most tutors and draw spells, however you cannot use the mana generated by LED to cast said tutor/draw spell. In addition, you should retain priority and crack LED when casting said tutor or draw spell because if you give your opponent a chance to respond and they choose not to, the spell will begin to resolve.
can it be used with necromancy would be my main question
Okay, LED is one of the oddest cards in Magic. Even the Gatherer rulings state that it is weird.
Normally the way Magic works is you announce a spell then pay any costs then put it onto the stack. Once this process has begun the only abilities that can be activated are mana abilities.
LED is odd because of the oracle text stating it can only be activated whenever you can cast an instant which as I stated above you can't do.
In the case of Necromancy (or any card really) you have two options that don't help you. Either you activate LED then try to cast a spell but unfortunately you've already discarded it. Or you can cast the spell and go to use LED to pay the cost and be unable to since you can't activate it at that point.
You are out of luck. LED's ability can only be activated as an instantso the mana cannot be used to cast spells that are in your hand at the time you crack it.
EDIT: I know i was wrong but somebody is going to respond saying it again anyway. Changed it to be correct.
EDIT2: Yep, just wish typing on an xbox wasnt so slow...
You are out of luck. LED's ability is not a mana ability and uses the stack so the mana cannot be used to cast spells that are in your hand at the time you crack it.
Actually LED's ability is a mana ability it just has an activation restriction.

The ability is a mana ability, so it is activated and resolves as a mana ability, but it can only be activated at times when you can cast an Instant. Yes, this is a bit weird.
Mana abilities can usually be activated as part of paying cost for a spell that you cast. This is why there is a timing restriction on LED. You can't do that as you can only activate LED when you can play as instant. You can't play an instant while paying cost for a spell you're already trying to cast. Yes, this is a bit weird like the Gatherer says, but it basically means that you can't cast something in your hand with it. You need to use it for something else. Infernal Tutor is great because you can cast it with another mana sources and then activate LED in response, adding mana in your pool for the spell you are going to tutor and adding Hellbent to the tutor.
My own rules when building a Commander deck:
1) Underrated general that I can build around but the deck must work without him/her too.
2) Every card must be legal in both banlists.
3) No infinite combo that could win (and ruin) instantly a multiplayer game.
4) Synergy at all costs; stay on theme, avoid goodstuff.

Note that you put the spell on the stack as the 1st part of casting it (same time as announcing it), way before you pay the costs, tho this doesn't effect the answer. It just isn't considered cast till after you pay the cost.
