So from what I understand, the ruling on Rain of Gore and creatures with lifelink (for reference: Archangel of Thune) is that lifelink does NOT trigger Rain because of the wording on rain and lifelink.
Rain says "if a spell or ability would cause its controller to gain life...." combat damage from a life linker does NOT trigger rain because it is actually the combat damage which is causing you to gain life, not the ability of lifelink, which merely places a status effect on said creature causing them to gain life whenever they deal damage.
BUT, if a creature deals damage outside combat, such as Grim Lavamancer or Prodigal Sorcerer with lifelink, this DOES trigger Rain of Gore.
I could be wrong about that last part, but if I'm not, what happens when you fight with a card like Domri Rade or Uvenwald Tracker?
That's kinda what I thought, but then on the other hand, the ability is causing the fight. The damage itself is causing the actual lifegain.
Lifelink will never trigger Rain of Gore whether it is through fighting or combat. The reason for this is because lifelink alters the result of damage so it isn't the ability that is gaining you life. It sounds a bit off I know, but it basically boils down to lifelink not directly causing you to gain life compared with say Spirit Link or Heroes Reunion.
After looking at the rules and the cards for a bit my interpretation is that Gore never applies to lifelink because it is referring to the second definition of ability. So while lifelink is causing you to gain life (you have to deffine "causes" supper narrowly for this not to be true) it is not an ability in the sense Gore is looking for. Having two definition for game terms can get confusing sometimes.
Ability: 1. Text on an object that explains what that object does or can do. 2. An activated or triggered ability on the stack. This kind of ability is an object. See rule 112, "Abilities," and section 6, "Spells, Abilities, and Effects."
Would damage dealt by a creature with lifelink via an activated ability (Brion Stoutarm) cause Rain of Gore's replacement effect to be applicable?
Likewise Pandemonium when a creature with lifelink also controlled by Pandy's controller enters the field?
Similarily, Blood Feud spell where a creature with lifelink controlled by Feud's controller is involved in the fight?
Rain of Gore applies to all three original cases. It does not apply to combat damage from a creature with lifelink.
Lifelink does not make you gain life. It modifies the consequences of damage. Whatever is dealing damage is causing the life gain.
Rain of Gore is looking for life gain caused by spells or abilities.
- It will apply if a spell with lifelink deals damage, because the spell is causing the life gain.
- It will apply if an activated or triggered ability from a source with lifelink deals damage, because that ability is causing the life gain.
- It will not apply if a creature with lifelink deals combat damage, because combat damage is causing the life gain.
