I'm going to the SCG Charlotte Open this weekend and I have a few questions:
1. How long is a round at an open event? I know it's somewhere between 40-50 minutes, but I can't remember the exact length.
2. I recently got an iPhone and downloaded an app that keeps track of life totals, poison damage, and time left in the round. Am I allowed to use my phone for this app or are phones not allowed at high level events?
1. 50 minutes is the standard, 40 is the minimum. StarCity events use 50 minute rounds in swiss.
2. Ask the head judge when you get to the event. In general, though paper is easier to leverage when you and your opponent have a life total discrepency, and you are making your case to the judge trying to sort it out.
The default time for Magic tournament rounds is 50 minutes. That's what they'll be at any SCG event.
Electronic devices are allowed at the Head Judge's discretion, as long as you aren't using them to access remote information, and any data you do access is made available to both players. Check before the event begins so you don't get in trouble, as the HJ may say "No Electronic Devices."
