Hey guys, I realize this isn't a rules question, but I thought this was the best place for it. If not, feel free to move it if you're a mod! lol
Anyway, at my local shop, and with my more casual friends as well, I've had problems convincing them that some sort of ruling is correct. For example, I had a debate with another player recently (great guy, fun to play against, don't get me wrong), and I explained how Proliferate doesn't target, so if I put a -1/-1 counter on a Sphinx of Jwar Isle with Contagion Engine, then I can proliferate it up to kill it. I mentioned how the word "target" works, versus "choose", etc, and he was just not convinced. I don't mean to get mired down in details of one incident, but thats a pretty good example. Another one that comes up often is protection against a color and board wipes (i.e. White Knight vs Consume the Meek)
So, what do you guys do when you're not in an "official position" to make rulings, and people don't believe you?
In person it's a bit trickier, but on the internet, citing the comprehensive rules tends to be pretty helpful.
In person, you could bring them to the computer to look it up, or if you have a long term disagreement, print up the relevant section and bring it to the place you play magic.
Way back when, before I was known at my store for being a rules guy, I would actually ask questions on a site (before this one existed), print it out and show it to them.
If you have a smartphone or an e-reader, it isn't too tough carry around a copy of the Comprehensive Rules. (I keep a copy of the latest version on my Kindle where it's easy to access and search.) If you're familiar with the document, it isn't to hard to find what you're looking for to settle almost any rules dispute.
