Furnace of Rath. The text on this card confuses me somewhat. "If a source would deal damage to a creature of player, double that damage."
Does an attacking creature count as a "source"? Or does this enchantment just apply to spells like Fireball, Lightning Bolt, etc.?
608.7a If an effect requires a player to choose a source of damage, he or she may choose a permanent; a spell on the stack (including a permanent spell); any object referred to by an object on the stack, by a replacement or prevention effect that’s waiting to apply, or by a delayed triggered ability that’s waiting to trigger (even if that object is no longer in the zone it used to be in); or, for certain casual variant games, a face-up card in the command zone.
So, essentially, yes; a creature or a spell can be a source of damage, but it is not limited to just those.
Everything can be a source. A spell, an ability, combat damage, you name it
So yes, combat damage will be doubled. Yes, a Lightning Bolt will deal 6 damage, a Prodigal Sorcerer will deal 2 damage. Everything that deals damage, deals double damage.

"Combat damage" is not a source of damage. The source of damage is whatever is dealing the damage, which in the case of combat damage are attacking and blocking creatures.
Also, abilities aren't sources of damage, either. A resolving ability may cause something else, such as the source of the ability, to deal damage. Again, the source of the damage is whatever is actually dealing the damage.

I am sorry. I meant that combat damage was also doubled, but the source is of course the creature, not the "combat damage". Same with abilities. I should have been more clear, but I was giving an easy explanation, not the technical one

Not quite. Whatever the effect says deals the damage, as in "Lightning Bolt deals...", is the source of that damage. Spells can be sources of damage, but not abilities. In combatdamage, the creature delaing the damage is the source, not "combat damage" itself.

I don't understand what you mean by 'not quite' it was very succinct, any permanent, visable card in a public zone or object that is not in a public zone, but is a source of an ability that is currently on the stack can potentially be a source of damage not just creatures and spells (that doesn't necessarily mean you can choose all of them as sources if asked, but the potential is there).
Edit: For absolute clarification you can only choose permanents, spells, objects specifically referred to by objects on the stack, current replacement effects or delayed triggered abilities as sources of damage.
But almost any card or other game object can be referred to by abilities and/or effects, hence my exhaustive reasoning for 'potential sources'.
@ Carsten: I suppose you may be right, but extra clarification never hurt anyone. (who doesn't already have RSI)

It seems to me that Condor's post was intended as a reply to post #3 and he accidentally quoted post #2. I could be wrong, though.
