Friend has a Phantom Tiger out, with one +1/+1 counter on it as well as an Armadillo Cloak. I paid 6 mana and played Banefire to deal 5 damage to the Tiger, making the damage "unpreventable". So, here's the question. Does the Tiger die or not, since Banefire reads if X is 5 or more, damage can't be prevented.
I'm pretty sure the Tiger would die, even though it's a Phantom but my friend believes it can't be killed that way. So, who's right?
Yes it dies. The damage can't be prevented, so the Phantom's ability will not prevent the damage (note that a counter is still technically removed even if the damage can't be prevented).

Scientists have calculated that the chance of anything so patently absurd actually existing are millions to one. But magicians have calculated that million-to-one chances crop up nine times out of ten.
Banefire says the damage can't be prevented, so the damage can't be prevented and is dealt as normal. The Tiger dies.
The only real quirk here is if the Tiger somehow had a really high toughness and a +1/+1 counter on it such that it wouldn't die from the Banefire damage. In that case, the damage still would not be prevented, but a +1/+1 counter would be removed from it anyway.

Thanks.
