Just a stupid question, but it's something that came up tonight in our weekly sessions.
If, say, a volcanic fallout was played, can the caster of the fallout (or someone who copies it) redirect the damage from a player to said player's planeswalker?
My understanding of this is that damage can't be redirected, because it's a global affect, not targeting any one specific thing. However, I've been wrong before.
212.9g If noncombat damage would be dealt to a player by a source controlled by an opponent, that
opponent may have that source deal that damage to a planeswalker the first player controls
instead. This is a redirection effect (see rule 419.6c) and is subject to the normal rules for
ordering replacement effects (see rule 419.9). The opponent chooses whether to redirect the
damage as the redirection effect is applied.
It doesn't matter if the damage was a burn spell targeted at a player or a volcanic fallout doing damage to everyone. If you play volcanic fallout you can redirect the damage it would deal to your opponent to a planeswalker they control.
You can't however redirect the damage fallout is dealing to you

That makes sense in a way, yet it doesn't, as I don't understand damage that isn't targeting someone can be redirected. Seems to be a loophole, but hey, it works
Damage never targets anyone. Spells and abilities target things, and Spells and Permanents deal damage to things, but damage never targets. This means that there is no functional difference between a Shock dealing two damage to a player and a Volcanic Fallout dealing two damage to them. The act of redirecting damage has nothing to do with the "damage's target" being changed (which doesn't exist), and has simply to do with the reassigning of what gets dealt damage.

Just curious.
