in all my learning of the rules and matches we came up with a situation regarding taking control of a creature and retaking control. i forgot the cards involved but i'll use similar.
So if Me the active player plays Dominate on my opponents creature that card goes on the stack. Let's say in return my opponent plays the same card on the same creature in the way of regaining control of his creature.
in my head that makes sense BUT if i get the rules correct the stack resolves from top to bottom so his card resolves first on the creature he still controls and then my card resolves and i still get the creature.......
or am i screwing up the rules here big time. or do i get it right
You're getting it right. Your opponent would be much better off waiting for your Dominate to resolve before playing theirs. The latest control effect overlays previous ones.

I'm a former judge (lapsed), who keeps up to date on rules and policy. Keep in mind that judges' answers aren't necessarily more valid than those of people who aren't judges; what matters is we can quote the rules to back up our answers. When in doubt, ask for such quotes.
