Hi, second post - so I hope I'm in the right place!
I have some questions about applying protection type effects on stack.
Let's say I'm playing white against aggro red. I have a 2/2 out. They shock it for 2, in response I cast an emerge unscathed or gods willing or some such. In response to my casting a protection spell and declaring 'red' they cast an additional direct damage spell, say a lightning bolt, on stack and kill my creature before I can give it protection. Is this correct?
Same question but with act of treason - if they have 2 of them, and 6 mana they can act of treason me - I give protection from red - and they act of treason again in response (casting a second copy of the spell from their hand) I loose my creature to them unless I have a second protection spell and mana to cast it?
I presume that the same would hold true for a spell that gave indestructible like Ajani's presence or a flicker effect like cloudshift again presuming that they put multiple direct damage spells on stack (red white stack sandwich)
You have the idea right. In order for your protection spell to work players must be able to respond to things and have their response before the exciting incident resolves. So if you try to protect a creature they can respond by killing it. The only problem you have is that Act of Treason is a sorcery so they can't respond to your spell with Act of Treason. Sorcerys can only be cast on the respective player's turn while the stack is empty.
Note, that declaring the color for the target to be protected from is a choice made on resolution. If you announce that choice before that time (like when casting the spell) you are proposing a shortcut. If they wait to see what color you choose, or ask what color you choose, then they cannot respond, since that means they are passing priority and letting the spell resolve.
