I was playing a game of EDH the other night and a rules question involving attack triggers came up that I wasn't sure of.
I had an Etali, Primal Storm which was equipped with Argentum Armor but was also enchanted with an opponent's Darksteel Mutation. I declared Etali as my attacker during my combat step. I wanted to resolve the attack triggers so that the Argentum Armor would trigger first, destroying the Darksteel Mutation, thus allowing my Etali, Primal Storm to no longer be an insect and could then get it's attack trigger.
My opponent stated that I wasn't able to do the Etali, Primal Storm trigger and that it was just a vanilla 12/12 (with the armor).
The ability doesn't trigger because it effectively doesn't exist at the moment the attack is declared.
Etali needs to have its ability at the moment you declare it as an attacker. Having Etali get the ability back after the declaration of attackers doesn't work, it is too late for the ability to trigger.
Your opponent was right about you not getting the trigger. He was incorrect about Etali being a vanilla 12/12. As soon as Darksteel Mutation stops enchanting Etali, it gets its base stats and all its abilities back, including the attack trigger. BUT, that trigger only gets one chance to trigger per combat phase, when Etali is declared as attacker. Since at that time the creature didn't have that ability, it didn't trigger, and won't get another chance this combat.
You don't put one trigger on the stack, resolve it, then add the next. That is not how the game works. You add all waiting triggers to the stack the next time a player would receive priority. Starting with the active player, all players add all their triggers in the order of their choosing, then the next player does the same. Then players can respond. All triggers are on the stack at that time.
This is my first post, so bare with me.

Should I have been able to trigger Etali, Primal Storm?
Thanks!
