Does faeburrow elder get an extra mana when I tap it with leyline of abundance in play?
If not, why not?

Yes. It is a creature tapping for mana which is what the Leyline cares about. Is there a reason you think you wouldn't get the extra mana?

On a side note, it is the Leyline producing the extra mana, not the creature itself.

Yes, Leyline of Abundance will add G if you use the mana ability on Faeburrow Elder. All leyline cares about is that the ability in question 1) Is a mana ability and 2) That it has in its cost.

The reason I asked is that it does not give an extra mana in MTGO.
