Can I have more than one version of the same planeswalker on the battlefield?
Yes, you can. Planeswalkers simply are legendary permanents, which are governed by the same rules as other legendary permanents such as legendary creatures: if you control two or more legendary permanents with the exact same name, you need to send all but one to the graveyard as a state-based action, but that is the only restriction. You can control multiple planeswalkers that are the same character and have the same planeswalker type, as long as they don't have the exact same full card name.
The rules about planeswalkers used to be separate and based on planeswalker type, and older planeswalker cards don't have the legendary supertype printed on them, but they all received it via errata, and now it's just the legendary rule.

I'm a former judge (lapsed), who keeps up to date on rules and policy. Keep in mind that judges' answers aren't necessarily more valid than those of people who aren't judges; what matters is we can quote the rules to back up our answers. When in doubt, ask for such quotes.

So it's possible both pieces of information were "true", one player just wasn't up to date with the rule changes.
