If I have Lifeline in play as well as Karn, Silver Golem and I turn one of my other artifacts into a creature with Karn and the artifact creature is destroyed during the turn, is that artifact that had become an artifact creature still considered to be a creature despite being in the graveyard, thereby allowing me to return it by having Lifeline trigger (assuming there's another creature in play) before Karn's effect ends?
And in the Commander format, if Lifeline is in play and my commander is sent to the graveyard, if I let it go to the graveyard instead of the command zone, would Lifeline return it to the battlefield (assuming there was another creature in play)?
Lifeline only checks if a card is a creature when that creature dies. So it would return in your scenario, but it would be just an artifact and not a creature.
Yes Lifeline workds the same for commanders as any other creature so long as you don't send it to the command zone.
Like other similar effects that reference only the card, not the "exiled card" or "the card in the graveyard", the card would return from the command zone too if it was put there instead of the graveyard, assuming it hasn't moved from there before the effect resolves. Lifeline specifies 'dies' which means that if you place the commander into the command zone that will replace the event of death so it will not actually come back.
