Quick question that probably never comes up. but on card like Acorn catapult does the target have to be a Player, Planeswalker or Creature. or can the target be anything really (Granted an artifact would not be effected by damage, but it is interesting)
EDIT: realize it was a dumb question. i was reading oracle texts not the card themselves, which specifies targets.
You cannot target anything but a creature, player, or planeswalker with a spell or ability that says "damage to any target." (Rule 114.4)
thank you, just some things damage any player creature or planeswalker while others say any target and i was curious as to why some would specify and others would not.
"Damage to any target" is a wording introduced when damage redirection to planeswalkers was abolished. Note that oracle texts are the only "valid" texts, so Acorn Catapult can target planeswalkers.
114.4. Some spells and abilities that refer to damage require “any target,” “another target,” “two
targets,” or similar rather than “target [something].” These targets may be creatures, players, or
planeswalkers. Other game objects, such as noncreature artifacts or spells, can’t be chosen.
"Damage to any target" is a wording introduced when damage redirection to planeswalkers was abolished.
To be correct, that wording is a re-introduction. One such card would be Rod of Ruin pre-dating the introduction Planeswalkers and is a good example (along with the Oracle text) of the changes to the card wording spanning years of reprints.
I’m just being pedantic because the OP might find it awkward or confusing if they’re exposed to the older cards with the correct text on the old frame.
