You have a Corpsejack Menace on the battlefield and cast Awakening of Vitu-Ghazi, targeting a land you control.

Does the land get nine or eighteen +1/+1 counters?

(Is the land considered a creature when the +1/+1 counters are put on the land?)

Unfortunately you will only get 9. You perform the actions as they appear on the card. You put the counters on the land, then then land becomes a creature.

Nine counters. The land doesn't become a creature until the second sentence, after the counters have been placed on the permanent.

If the land was already a creature when you cast Awakening, then it'll get eighteen counters as the prior poster mentioned.
