Add one mana of any type that a land you control could produce. If Incubation Druid has a +1/+1 counter on it, add three mana of that type instead.
Compare to: lifeline
Whenever a creature dies, if another creature is on the battlefield, return the first card to the battlefield under its owner’s control at the beginning of the next end step
As I understand it, both require exactly 1 counter on it to work. Or have I been misplaying lifeline all this time?
I'm not sure of what the question is considering Lifeline doesn't at all mention counters...
Um, if you're asking what I assume you're asking, Incubation Druid adds extra mana if it has one or more +1/+1 counters, and Lifeline returns creatures if there are one or more creatures on the battlefield.
the word "another" in an intervening "if" clause (C.R. 603.4) means "at least one other" (thus, "if another creature..." means "if at least one other creature..." here [C.R. 108.1]), and
the word "a" or "an" in a condition on a card means "at least one" (thus, "a +1/+1 counter" means "at least one +1/+1 counter" here), except if that condition is a trigger condition (C.R. 603.1) or contains "would".
I used lifeline as a precedent for what one creature meant (as in exactly one, since it should say one or more otherwise). I’ve aleays played it as ‘exactly one other’, so I thought the new card worked a bit weirdly.
Thanks for the clarification. I’m gonna have to eviscerate the guy who tricked me into thinking that lifeline worked differently.
"One or more" usually comes after "whenever", to prevent abilities from triggering multiple times. If you're asked "Do you have a sibling?" and you have two, would you answer "no"?
