I have a question about how this petrification counter works. Our play group was playing commander and someone put a petrification using Xathrid Gorgon counter on my commander. Then a board wipe was played and I recast my commander the next turn.
I was told the petrification counter still applies even though that card has died and come back. Is this accurate? Does this counter stay even through death and then resseruction through either a graveyard or a command zone?
Actually, whether the petrification counter leaves or stays is irrelevant; the effect of Xathrid Gorgon is entirely independant of the presence or absence of a petrification counter, as is plainly written in Xathrid Gorgon's own rulings.
Your Commander gets freed from Gorgon's effect, not because it loses a counter, but rather because it leaves the battlefield (and returns):
Rule 400.7: An object that moves from one zone to another becomes a new object with no memory of, or relation to, its previous existence. (…)
