hi! i would like to ask something about grave strength with the scenario below:
scenario: i have a grizzly bear in play and i cast grave strength choosing grizzly bear. my opponent respond with fatal push while grave strength is on the stack.
question: will the mill effect of grave strength still resolve after this or it also fizzle? thanks!
*note: i'm normally confused how spells resolve with "target" and "choose" wordings.
Grave Strength is a spell with one target. If that target is removed before the spell resolves, Grave Strength will be countered on resolution, and the mill will not occur. Don't get thrown off by "choose" because the spell actually does have a target. They could avoid the "choose" bit by burying the target at the end of the spell's text, but it would hurt clarity.
Note, that with a recent rules change, a spell with no legal targets left will not get countered anymore, but will simply have no effect and be removed from the stack. This matters only in some corner cases, this process is still informally refered to as "fizzling".
Put the top three cards of your library into your graveyard, then put a +1/+1 counter target creature for each creature card in your graveyard.
As BlazingRagnarok pointed out, Wizards of the Coast decided to put the word 'target' near the beginning of the text, in order to help player better understand the ability (which obviously didn't have the expected result with you, and many others).
You have to name a target as you cast the spell. However, when the word 'choose' is used without the word 'target', such choice would be made on resolution.
