Okay, I need some help here. I have a great idea, but I am not sure how great it is and I need help with the Rules on it.
My wife has the Feline Ferocity Deck, which I have upgraded. Obviously, the commander is Arahbo, Roar of the World. I came across the card Helm Of The Host and thought there would be some crazy synergy here, if it works.
So, Arahbo's eminence ability says, "At the beginning of combat on your turn, if Arahbo, Roar of the World is in the command zone or on the battlefield, another target Cat you control gets +3/+3 until end of turn."
Helm of the Host says, "At the beginning of combat on your turn, create a token that's a copy of equipped creature, except the token isn't legendary if equipped creature is legendary. That token gains haste."
Here's my question, if I equip Arahbo and go into the beginning of combat phase, then can I copy Arahbo due to Helm's ability, and then have the option to still use the Arahbo Copy's Eminence ability too? So, I would have two Arahbos using the eminence ability on that same beginning of combat step?
My thoughts are that at the beginning of combat phase, Helm would copy Arahbo if it was equipped to Arahbo, and therefore create a second Arahbo that was not legendary. Then the Arahbo copy's Eminence would be able to be activated along with the original copy since I have not declared attackers yet. Am I correct in thinking like this?
The end result being that I could use the eminence ability twice and beef up another cat with a +3/+3 twice. Or am I wrong, and I would have to wait until my next turn to use the Arahbo Copy's Eminence ability?
Thanks ahead of time. I hope this is clear enough.
No, the copy's eminence ability will not trigger. Barring additional combat steps, the beginning of combat happens once, at which point both Arahbo and the helm trigger. They will resolve, a cat will be pumped, and the copy will be created, but the opportunity for eminence to trigger has already passed.
In general, an ability of the form "At the beginning of [step or phase], if [condition], ..." triggers only at the beginning of the given step or phase and only if the given condition is true at that moment (C.R. 603.4, 603.2), and that ability will get to resolve only if that condition still holds upon resolving (C.R. 603.4, 608.2a). Nothing you do during that step or phase will change whether that ability will trigger. Besides Arahbo, other examples include—
So... if i have puresteel paladin in play and his metalcraft ability active (equipment's you controls have 0 equip as long as you control 3 artifacts) as well as leonin shikari (you may activate equip abilities any time you could cast an instant) could i, at the beginning of combat "go arbitrarily large" and swing with a killion tokens?
No. "At the beginning of combat" is a single point in time in the turn, not a duration. It refers specifically to the exact moment the combat phase begins. Anything happening afterwards, including anything going on the stack because of it, and even more resolving any of that, is already after the beginning of combat. No such trigger will go off again, because the trigger condition is over already. A permanent with such a trigger has to exist before the combat phase begins in order to trigger that ability.
