Hardened Scales gives you an extra +1/+1 counter, Doubling Season gives you double the amount of them (amongst other things). What happens if you have both on the battlefield? Do you pick one? Does Hardened Scales apply first [thus (x+1)*2]? Does Doubling Season apply first [thus 2x+1]?
Those are both replacement effects that apply to the same event. As such, as the controller of the affected object, you choose which such effect to apply first to the placing of counters, and then you apply the second effect to the event as modified by the first. To get the maximum number of counters, you'll want to apply Scales first, so that it adds 1 to the number of counters, and then Doubling Season doubles the number including the +1 from Scales.

I'm a former judge (lapsed), who keeps up to date on rules and policy. Keep in mind that judges' answers aren't necessarily more valid than those of people who aren't judges; what matters is we can quote the rules to back up our answers. When in doubt, ask for such quotes.
