Hi all, I’m building myself a graveyard based deck and have yavimaya elder and carrion feeder in there, and I was wondering if they combo? I couldn’t find an answer online so thought I’d ask here.
So Yavimaya has his 2, sac yavimaya: draw a card, ability, which then trigger his searching for land ability. Carrion feeder says sac a creature: add +1/+1 to carrion feeder. By sac’ing yavimaya, does that count as a sac’d creature for carrion feeder? Or do I specifically have to sac a creature saying I’m doing it for carrion feeder, even though there’s no mana cost or tapping to do it?
They do not combo unfortunately. Whatever is to the left of the : in an activated ability is a cost and must be paid specifically to activate that ability. In the case of Yavimaya Elder this means you are sacrificing him to activate his ability and that cannot be used to pay for any other abilities such as Carrion Feeder.
More on this...
The rules allows you to do one, and only one, thing at a time. So, either you activate the Feeder, or you activeate the Elder; you can't do both at the same time.
Activating either one also means you have to pay for the activation: sacrifice is the cost.
Thus, you may activate the Elder first, and then sacrifice the Elder as payment.
Next, you may activate the Feeder, but Elder isn't there anymore to be sacrificed: you'd need to sacrifice some other creature.

Here the sacrifice is not a cost. The Beetle's triggered ability looks for the event of sacrificing a creature and adds a counter to itself.
