Question: I cast collective brutality escalating twice, discarding call to the netherworld and dark confidant. can i use the madness from call to return the just now discarded confidant, or must i pick a creature already in a graveyard? if this is possible, does the order cards are chosen in matter? Thanks in advance.
This works fine. Both are discarded at the same time, then you cast your madness spell. So confidant has been sitting in the grave for some time already.
You can do this fine due to the way madness works (using a triggered ability). The cards you pick to discard for Escalate are discarded at the same time as you pay costs during Brutality's casting process. Having madness, Call to the Netherworld is exiled instead of going to your graveyard, while Confidant goes to your graveyard directly. Then the madness triggered ability goes on the stack above Collective Brutality and, when it resolves, you choose to cast Call, and you may choose Confidant, which has been in your graveyard for a while at that point, as your target.
I'm a former judge (lapsed), who keeps up to date on rules and policy. Keep in mind that judges' answers aren't necessarily more valid than those of people who aren't judges; what matters is we can quote the rules to back up our answers. When in doubt, ask for such quotes.
