I am trying to look at interaction of continuous effects, but sometimes I have a hard time telling the difference between characteristic-defining abilities and effects that set power and/or toughness. What categories would the following cards fall under? Animate Land Genju of the Spires Ensoul Artifact Phyrexian Totem
thank you
Static abilities with the form "power is equal" (e.g., Dakmor Sorceress, Tarmogoyf), "toughness is equal" (e.g., An-Havva Constable), or "power and toughness are each [equal]" (e.g., Apocalypse Demon, Daxos the Returned) are characteristic-defining abilities that set power and/or toughness (C.R. 604.3, 604.3a, 613.3a). Effects with the form "becomes a P/T ... creature", "are P/T ... creatures", "has base power and toughness...", or "with base power and toughness...", as is the case with all four of the cards you mention, merely set power and/or toughness to a specific value (C.R. 613.3b).
Animate Land
Genju of the Spires
Ensoul Artifact
Phyrexian Totem
