Cauldron of Souls + Horobi, Death's Wail:Target any number of creatures and destroy them.
Since Horobi is in play, its ability will be applied first before persist will be granted.
I am not sure I understand, anyone cares to explain?
When you have two of your own abilities entering the stack, you get to choose the order of resolution. It only has to go in a certain order when there are multiple players with effects or spells applying on one stack. So yes, if you have Horobi and Cauldron in play, you can target any number of creatures, then apply Horobi's ability, then destroy them before the persist effect resolves. Conversely, you could also choose for them to gain persist first, then be destroyed, perhaps if you wanted multiple ETB triggers to occur.
This is correct. Targets for spells and abilities are chosen at activation or casting. So if you activate cauldron you have to chose its targets prior to the resolution of the ability. Then, since the condition for Horobi's triggered ability has been met he triggers. These go on the stack on top of the Cauldron activation meaning they will also resolve first, before anything has gained persist.

In this scenario you can't order them in the way you want - Horobi will always resolve first.
The first step in activating an ability is putting it on the stack. So you do that with the Cauldron - which means it will always be on the stack before Horobi's triggered ability. While activating the ability some dudes are targeted, which triggers Horobi and the next time SBAs are going to be checked (after you're done targeting and paying costs for the Cauldron) all of those triggers will go on the stack, eventually resolving before Cauldron ever has a chance to.
This has to do with an activated ability and a triggered ability and when they go on the stack. When you activate Cauldron of Souls, you put the ability to grant persist on the stack. But the act of targeting the creatures causes Horobi's ability to trigger, and it is placed on top of the stack. The destroy trigger resolves, destroying the creatures. The ability granting persist is still on the stack and has not resolved, so the creatures do not yet have persist. They stay dead. Cauldron's ability fizzles with no legal targets remaining.
Ok I get it. I am sure my group will give me some form of denial when they hear me explain the above. I will print your responses to avoid a lenghty discussion!
Thanks
