Hello everyone, I recently was playing a game of commander and I never had both of these enchantments on the field before, but I managed to have both Humility and Opalescence on the field at the same time soooo...how exactly does that work, because I apparently broke magic according to my play group.
Edit: I forgot to mention I also had Enchanted Evening on the field as well.
The detailed situation with Humility and Opalescence is covered in this thread, especially my comment 3.
[I]f Humility is also on the battlefield, all permanents which are currently creatures will lose all abilities regardless of whether Humility entered the battlefield before or after Opalescence ..., since [the latter doesn't] affect abilities (C.R. 613.1f).
If Humility entered the battlefield after Opalescence ..., and its effect starts to apply in layer 6 (C.R. 613.1f), all creatures will have base power and toughness 1/1 (C.R. 613.3b, 613.6a, 613.6c, 613.6, 613.5).
If Humility entered the battlefield before Opalescence ..., and its effect starts to apply in layer 6 (C.R. 613.1f), the following creatures will have base power and toughness equal to their converted mana cost instead:
all non-Aura enchantments (other than Opalescence) if Opalescence is on the battlefield[,]
and all other creatures will have base power and toughness 1/1 (C.R. 613.3b, 613.6a, 613.6c, 613.6, 613.5).
Depending on wether Humility or Opalescence has the later time stamp, Humily's power/toughness will be 1/1 (if it has the later time stamp), or 4/4 (if Opalescence has the later time stamp). The time stamp of a permanent and the continous effects of its static abilites are the same as when that permanent entered the battlefield.
To go into more detail, continous effects, that change characteristics, are applied in a series of layers, which you go though in a specific nonchanging order. Within a layer, you apply all applicable effects in time stamp order, unless there is dependency. The only overlapping effects in this scenario are the power/toughness setting effects (layer 7b) of both enchantments. Since neither depends on the other, the later one wins.
Also of note, once an effect has begun to apply, even if just in part or in a previous layer, it will apply to its full extend, even if the ability generating the effect is removed somewhere in the process, as is the case here.
what about Enchanted Evening, does that mean all lands are immediately destroyed or are they 0/0, or 1/1 's? gahh i confused myself with my own deck.
That depends on which of the other two enchantments was on the field first. Because the other will determine the power/toughness of all nonaura permanents.
Note, that even if Humility is the later one, and thus the lands are 1/1s, they don't have any abilities, so cannot tap for mana. This is true, even if Opalescence has the later time stamp and the lands are kept alive only via something like Gaea's Anthem.
Also note, that Enchanted Evening creates a case of dependency for this scenario in the type changing layer. Since EE makes everything into enchantments, and Opalescence makes every nonaura enchantment into a creature (thus more enchantments to turn into creatures), EE will always be applied before Opalescence in this layer regardless of time stamp.
In general, if Enchanted Evening is also on the battlefield in addition to Opalescence and Humility, then this will create a layer 4 dependency (C.R. 613.7, 613.1d): Opalescence will depend on Enchanted Evening (since Enchanted Evening will change which permanents Opalescence applies to in layer 4), but not vice versa (C.R. 613.7a-b, 613.7), so Enchanted Evening applies first and makes all permanents enchantments, and any of those enchantments that aren't Auras (except Opalescence itself) will become creatures due to Opalescence (C.R. 613.7b, 613.7). The rest of the story (layer 6, abilities, and layer 7, power and toughness) is given in my comment 2.
