If I control an Altar of the Brood and have infinite ETB triggers, I have infinite mill. However, my opponent has an Eldrazi in their deck, say an Emrakul, the Aeons Torn. This prevents them from decking.
I know it is possible to shorthand infinite combos in paper in order to save time. My question is: can I shorthand the combo to the exact scenario where Emrakul is the last card in their library?
No. For a legal shortcut, you have to announce the number of iterations and what the game state will be afterwards. Each step must be deterministic. But with Emrakul in the opponent's deck, you have a random element, and thus you cannot acertain, that Emrakul will be the only card remaining, or how many cards will be in the library, or when a shuffle will occur. You cannot legally shortcut this.
