New here and had a question about countervailing winds that I couldn't find the answer too through google. "counter Target spell unless it's controller pays 1 for each card in your graveyard."
If I have zero cards in my graveyard (friend loves leyline of the void) does that mean countervailing Winds can be stopped for 0 mana, or that he cannot counter? Not sure and would like to know. Thanks!
It will take no mana to stop the Winds from countering the spell. All the player has to do is to acknowledge that he pays that 0 cost. Of course, it is up to him, he could also decide not to pay that 0 cost and the spell would get countered.
Your opponent would be able to pay 0 to prevent the spell from being countered. The spell looks at the number of cards, then asks for that amount of mana. So with, say, 3 cards in your graveyard, they'd have to pay 3. With 0, they'd have to pay 0. Note, your opponent can still chose to not pay the 0, if they chose to for some reason, and they spell you targeted would be countered. It is pretty unlikely that they'd want that, however.
