No, the attacker gets to deal its damage twice, so both creatures end up dead.
If there's one or more creatures with First Strike or Double Strike attacking or blocking, that Combat Phase will have two Combat Damage Steps. Creatures with First Strike deal damage on the first step, creatures with Double Strike deal damage on both steps, and creatures without either ability deal damage only in the second one. The damage of each step is dealt simultaneously.
So:
First damage step: the attacker deals 2 damage to the blocker. The blocker doesn't deal damage this step. Both creatures survive for now.
Second damage step: the attacker deals 2 more damage to the blocker, and at the same time the blocker deals 2 damage to the attacker. Both creatures die.
Now, if the 2/4 blocker had First Strike (or Double Strike), then it would be able to kill the attacker in the first step and survive.
With a double striker (or first striker) involved in combat (attacking or blocking), there will be two combat damage steps. In the first of those, only creatures with first strike or double strike deal combat damage. In the second, all creatures with double strike deal combat damage again, and all creatures that didn't yet get to deal combat damage do so. (So giving a ceature first strike after the first round of combat damage will not prevent it from dealing combat damage in the second.) In each combat damage step, after the turn based action of assignig and dealing combat damage, state based actions are checked and destroy all lethally damaged creatures (and other stuff). So unless the 2/4 has first strike (or double strike) when the first combat damage step begins, both creatures will die.
I have a scenario that I need help with, I have a 5/9 double strike lifelink and attack, my opponent blocks with a 9/6 double strike, I say they both died, he said his didn't, he said I hit him for 5 then he hit me for 9 this killing my creature, therefore my double strike doesn't hit a second time and I only gain 5 life instead of the 10 I usually would do to double strike. We are both kinds new to this so not sure exactly what the rules with double strike scenario like this. Thanks

In this scenario, both the attacker and the blocker have double strike, so they both assign and deal combat damage at the same time — namely in the first combat damage step (C.R. 510.1, 501.2, 702.4b). If either creature doesn't survive that combat damage, it won't get to assign combat damage in the second combat damage step (C.R. 702.4b). (Note that double strike doesn't mean a creature with that ability assigns twice its power in combat damage, but rather it assigns combat damage, in general, in two separate combat damage steps each combat [C.R. 702.4b].)
Dude your awesome, so my opponent was right I would only hit his creature for 5, then mine would die and I would only gain 5 life for the damage dealt for my life link
I have Knight of Grace and Malice in the battle field with Valiant Knight. I played Kwende, Pride of Femeref which gives the two knight Double Strike. Then I activated Knight of Valor's Double Strike too. Does the Grace and Malice gets the ability to do Triple Strike?
Double Strike is not cumulative. The same creature getting Double Strike from two or more sources does not translate into "triple strike". It just has Double Strike.
702.4e. Multiple instances of double strike on the same creature are redundant.

2/2 with double strike attacks
2/4 blocks
Does the attacker die before it has a chance to deal its second strike? Thanks!
