Ive got a few thoughts/questions and wanted clarification from a rules expert/judge so the guys/gals over in our forum can get some closure.
So there's this new card (Oketra's Last Mercy) thats creating a lot of buzz in the Burn forum.
It reads "Your life total becomes your starting life total. Lands you control don't untap during your next untap phase.",
1. Is this considered life gain despite it not specifically saying gain life?
2. Can this card be negated/countered with anti life gain cards like Skullcrack, Atarka's Command, Leyline of Punishment
3. If this is considered life gain will an effect like Rain of Gore (yes, I get the why would someone cast this to hurt themselves) cause that much damage/life loss to the player who casts this instead.
1) Well, if your starting life total is higher than your current life total, yes. Every increase in life total is considered gaining life, every decrease in life total is considered losing life. To reach the new life total a player will gain/lose the appropriate amount of life.
2) Yes. As said in 1) the player gains/loses life to reach the new life total.
3) Yes. For the same reasons as 1) and 2).
Edit:
118.5. If an effect sets a player’s life total to a specific number, the player gains or loses the necessary amount of life to end up with the new total.
